Ted Cruz took to the Senate floor Friday and charged that Mitch McConnell told a “lie,” escalating his campaign against GOP leaders and challenging the traditions of the usually decorous chamber.

In a scathing floor speech, the Texas firebrand accused the Senate majority leader of breaking his word to him and the rest of the GOP conference over McConnell’s plans for the controversial Export-Import Bank, the country’s chief export credit agency. In Cruz’s telling, McConnell privately promised him and other Republicans that “there was no deal” with a handful of senators who were seeking to revive the bank in exchange for their votes to advance a major trade bill in May.

McConnell, he said, became “visibly angry” when Cruz challenged him on the matter during a meeting in May.

“Like St. Peter,” Cruz said, “he repeated it three times. He said, ‘The only thing I told the proponents of the Export-Import Bank is like any other senator in this body, they could offer any amendment they liked on an any amendable vehicle, but I gave them nothing.’”

That day in late May, Cruz said his staff informed him that McConnell was “lying” to him, but he said he believed the Senate GOP leader that “he wasn’t lying to us.”

But after McConnell took procedural steps Friday to move to a proposal to revive the Ex-Im bank, Cruz said on the Senate floor: “I cannot believe he would tell a flat-out lie.”

“What we saw today was an absolute demonstration that not only what he told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over again was a simple lie,” said Cruz, a fierce opponent of the bank. “The majority and minority leader, arm-in-arm again, should not team up against the American taxpayers.”

Cronyism built that!

Earlier this morning, in what the AP is calling a “stunning” attack, Sen. Ted Cruz took to the Senate floor and boldly called out Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for lying to him, to Republicans and to the American people, as well as claiming that the Senate under Republican control is no different from when Democrats were in control:

Ted Cruz: Mitch McConnell Is A Lying Liar Who Lies

JULY 24, 2015 By The Federalist Staff

“Like Saint Peter, he denied it three times,” Ted Cruz said of McConnell’s deal to revive the Ex-Im bank. “What he told the press over and over and over again was a simple lie.Scissors-32x32.png

The Rare EIB Interview: Senator Ted Cruz on Why He Called His Leader a Liar

July 24, 2015

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: I want to welcome back to the program, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, and Republican presidential candidate. You did something today I don't think I've seen before. This was a direct hit on your Senate leadership over a number of things, Senator. What spawned this today, and look, rather than me describe it for people, just tell everybody what you did and why you did it.

CRUZ: Well, Rush, it's great to be back with you. Today the Senate took up the Export-Import Bank, a classic example of cronyism and corporate welfare. The leader of Senate Republicans, Mitch McConnell, went to the floor and demonstrated that he had lied both to the American people and also to every Republican senator, including me. Back when we were having the fight over trade promotion authority, I asked Mitch McConnell directly if he had cut a deal to reauthorize this cronyism and corporate welfare in order to try to get the votes, and he looked at me, he looked at all 54 Republican senators, and he said flat-out, "There is no deal. There is no deal. There is no deal."Scissors-32x32.png

…the Senate under Republican control is no different from when Democrats were in control.

Sean Davis @seanmdav

All McConnell had to do was allow a vote on taxpayer funding for PP. That’s it. It’s all he had to do. And yet he couldn’t do it. B/c Ex-Im.

But when you have Senate leaders who fill the tree and file cloture to block amendments they don’t like, you don’t really have a Senate. Scissors-32x32.pnghttp://patterico.com/2015/07/27/ted-cruz-was-right-when-he-said/

Maybe we could’ve done this a bit better?

By: Joe Cunningham (Diary) | July 27th, 2015 at 04:00 PM

Let’s say I were a liberal Republican Senate Majority Leader. I have two major concerns before me: Nothing I really want can get done with conservatives on one side of me and Democrats to the other. There are three issues to take care of. The first has to do with highway funds and the special money that gets set aside in pet projects for all to enjoy. The second issue is the Export-Import Bank being reauthorized, which I really support and want to keep getting money from the businesses involved. The third issue is about the funding of Planned Parenthood, which has really rattled (and probably understandably so) my conservative colleagues. Scissors-32x32.png

The GOP Senate is Not On Our Side

By: Leon H. Wolf (Diary) | July 28th, 2015 at 10:57 AM

We have reached the point where a clear majority of sitting Republican Senators do not deserve your vote even in the general election. I say this because, quite simply, they have demonstrated time and time again that they are not on our side. Instead, they are on their own side. The priorities that these nattering, out of touch buffoons have embraced are so far out of step with the voters who sent them to office that they don’t even have the good sense to be embarrassed at how clueless they sound. Scissors-32x32.png

And here is the disconnect. No one who is not actually in the Senate gives a crap about the freaking Senate calendar. Voters do not send Republican Senators to Washington so that they might create a more well-organized calendar than the Democrats. They send them to Washington to reflect conservative values and to actually have votes on the issues that Republicans care about. If that involves some inconvenience to the most privileged 100 human beings on the planet, then so be it.

The fact that John Cornyn allowed himself to actually be quoted offering this pathetic excuse Scissors-32x32.png
