Valin
The Daily Bell: Wendy McElroy January 08, 2015 Microaggression. The word may soon be knocking on your door to demand supplication or another form of payment. Microaggression is the new politically correct campaign being launched by "disadvantaged" elites who are running out of even vaguely real transgressions to complain about. What You Can Expect to Be Accused Of Microaggression is unintended discrimination that demeans the "disadvantaged" even if the perpetrator does not intend to do so and is well-meaning. Coined in 1970 by Harvard psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce, it described unconscious racial insults delivered by whites to minorities. An example is a white teacher who asks a black student if he needs help with a math problem. The concept includes micro-insults or insensitive communication such as asking an Asian coworker where she comes from; the question allegedly suggests she is a foreigner and not a true American. It also includes micro-invalidations that negate the feelings or reality of a black, such as speaking well of Southern cooking; the comment allegedly suggests an approval of past slavery. These behaviors lead to micro-inequities; the behaviors are conveyed through unconscious messages that allegedly devalue the "disadvantaged" in the subtle communication of facial expressions, gestures, tone, word choice, nuance and syntax. Valin
If I Only Commit a ‘Microaggression,’ I’ve UnderachievedDavid FrenchJanuary 15, 2015 If it wasn’t clear before, it should be clear now: There is a segment of the population that will interpret virtually any form of communication from the “wrong” people as offensive or provocative. The concept, well known by now, is that life is full of “microaggressions” against the marginalized, and the most innocuous of comments can be the basis for claiming offense. Peruse the examples at microaggressions.com, and it’s hard not to laugh (one example of a “microaggression?” A mother, aunt, and grandmother asking a young woman if she’s “met any nice boys.”) In fact, I had to check it twice to make sure that I wasn’t being fooled by an Onion-style parody site. I’m still not completely convinced. For conservatives, the very existence of “microaggressions” should be clarifying and liberating. For years, I’ve been berated by fellow Christians, claiming that if only I were more “winsome” or communicated differently, then — what? — legions of people would fall down at the foot of the Cross? The faculty at Oberlin would join the rope line at a Ted Cruz rally? Now I’m told that even my body language or my friendly greetings can be basis for public complaint. Cyber_Liberty
I must admit, I thought of that song too. I've noticed this for quite some time...one cannot interact with certain other people at all without having a complaint raised. It's why people have withdrawn into little shells everywhere. If you can't figure out who the explosive people are, you just can't deal with anybody on any level. Makes it pretty hard to get any work done. One must play the odds. If you know, for example, that if you line up 20 black people, statistically only 1 or 2 did not vote for Obama. Maybe four did not vote for a Democrat in the last election. Just when we were getting to a color-blind society, we get dragged back to a segregationist society. You'd almost think it's done on purpose. I'm not sure I like people saying things like that!
clearvision
Websites with a white background color and black text probably send an oppressive message. I'll get to work on a new color scheme.
