Is Al Franken vulnerable?

After winning by just 312 votes in 2008, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) sought to keep his head down and shed his comedian persona.

But as the one-time funny man heads into a reelection contest this year, Republicans are hoping there is one thing he can’t shake: President Obama’s unpopularity.

Minnesota is not at the forefront of battleground state talk as the GOP tries to take back the Senate. It has gone for Democratic presidential candidates in every election since 1976. There is a history of Republican governors and senators, though, like Tim Pawlenty and Norm Coleman, who battled Franken to the recount last time around.

Add in Obama’s low approval rating in the traditionally blue state—43 percent in an April Suffolk University poll —and a Republican nominee, Mike McFadden, seeking to project a non-fiery, problem-solver image, and there is a real test for Franken’s transformation into a low-key workman.

“Al Franken’s gonna have a fight on his hands. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” said Larry Jacobs, a political scientist at the University of Minnesota and director of its Center for the Study of Politics and Governance.Scissors-32x32.png

I doubt it...and this gives me no pleasure to say this.

By all rights, Al Franken should not be a United States Senator. And I’m not just referring to the fact that after the votes were counted and certified on election night in 2008, Franken trailed his Republican opponent by 215 votes. Based on qualifications and disposition, Al Franken makes no sense as a member of “the world’s greatest deliberative body”.

Technically, by the contemporary Constitutional requirements of age and citizenship, he is qualified. But those we’re intended to be the means to an end. An end the Founders of the United States envisioned to be a man exhibiting the highest levels of intelligence, judgment, patriotism and character, the meritocratic 1% of the American citizenry. I feel your pain. McCain is one of my Senators, Flake is the other, so I don't really have any Senators to represent me. It's like living in California, sometimes.

@Valin!

Is it at all possible to intercept the "ever present" car trunk-full of timely, but uncounted ballots from the local prison?

I do not think they will have to this time. The problem was in 09 was 1. Norm did not run a very good campaign, I believe he though running against Franken would be a walk in the park, and he did not have to campaign hard. 2. There are those here who would not vote for or support Norm because he was not a "Real" Conservative. For some reason these people have not grasps the concept that this is Minnesota and (for now) center-right is as far to the right as you can get and win a state wide office.

@Valin

No such thing as a "conservative Muslim" candidate, is there?

Depends on how conservative is defined.

Just thinking it would be one way to elect a non-Progressive....maybe someone like:
