House-Leadership-Pulls-Border-Bill:

Unable to secure the necessary votes to pass it, House leadership pulled the Republican border spending bill from the House floor.

After both parties debated the border bill, the chair brought the Senate Transportation bill to the floor instead of the border bill vote that was scheduled to take place at 12:45 pm.

The bill was not rescheduled before the August recess which begins later today.

Speaker John Boehner issued the following statement:

“This situation shows the intense concern within our conference – and among the American people – about the need to ensure the security of our borders and the president’s refusal to faithfully execute our laws. There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries. For the past month, the House has been engaged in intensive efforts to pass legislation that would compel the president to do his job and ensure it can be done as quickly and compassionately as possible. Through an inclusive process, a border bill was built by listening to members and the American people that has the support not just of a majority of the majority in the House, but most of the House Republican Conference. We will continue to work on solutions to the border crisis and other challenges facing our country.”

AUGUST RECESS DELAYED AS BOEHNER TRIES TO RESUSCITATE DYING BORDER BILL

WASHINGTON,D.C.—In the Speaker's lobby just off the House floor, members of Congress were full of recriminations over how the border bill had just died—until it sprang back to life.

Now they have emerged from a last minute conference meeting vowing to “stay until we vote” and planning another meeting for tomorrow morning at 9:00am, although it's unclear what changes either to the legislative package or the support for the current one will change in the meantime.

Inside the meeting, Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) vowed that if need be, he would miss his son's upcoming wedding to stay in Washington to pass the bill.

But other lawmakers were punchy.

“Well, let's see, I've been bitching about this for, what, 15 months? Democrats wants the votes and Republicans want cheap labor. They didn't want to do anything with it, now they're going to wait until the last minute? You know, I have a forum I'm supposed to be at, I can't be, on this very subject,” Michigan Rep. Kerry Bentivolio said.Scissors-32x32.png

Gov. Perry: Congress shouldnt recess until border job is completed

Rebecca Shabad

July 31 2014

Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) on Thursday said Congress should not leave Washington for its five-week recess until the job is completed on the border crisis.

Perry said in a statement that it was beyond belief that Congress is abandoning its post, while people are suffering on the border.

While Texas has taken what steps it can to mitigate the damage caused by a porous border, Congress and the President have a duty to address our border security issues without further delay. Congress should not go into recess until the job is completed, he said.

House to remain in session until border bill passes

The House of Representatives will not adjourn for a five-week recess until it holds a vote on legislation addressing the surge of migrants at the U.S. border, lawmakers said after leaving a closed-door meeting.

The GOP leadership has not made an official announcement, but according to those in the room, a vote could come sometime Thursday or Friday.

It’s not clear yet whether members will consider the bill that was pulled from the floor today or devise a new one that has broader appeal to the House GOP and can garner the 218 votes needed for passage.

“All 234 members want to get a border resolution,” House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said after leaving a closed-door meeting with GOP lawmakers. “So we are going to stay in till we get it done. I’m comfortable it will be before we leave and I’m sure we’ll be leaving tomorrow.”Scissors-32x32.png
