Federal Jury Convicts Brooklyn Politician

July 26 2015

New York State Senator John Sampson "was convicted Friday of obstructing justice and lying to FBI agents by a federal jury in Brooklyn" as reported by John Marzulli for the Daily News: "the charges in the 10-count indictment stemmed from Sampson's alleged embezzling of hundreds of thousands of dollars entrusted to him as a court-appointed referee of foreclosure properties." Federal prosecutors also had brought embezzlement charges against Senator Sampson but the presiding judge dismissed them before trial because the statute of limitations had passed.

After his indictment Senator Sampson allegedly sought a list of cooperating witnesses from a friend who worked for the federal prosecutors "so he could arrange to 'take them out'" as reported by Mosi Secret for The New York Times.

Senator Sampson unsuccessfully sought to unseat Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes in a 2005 primary.

Earlier this week a federal jury convicted State Senator Thomas Libous for "lying to agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who were examining his son's hiring at a politically connected law firm" as reported by Thomas Kaplan for The New York Times: "in January, his son Matthew Libous was convicted of federal tax charges," and "later sentenced to six months in prison."

Pa. rep indicted in racketeering case

Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.) has been indicted on dozens of federal charges surrounding his unsuccessful run for Philadelphia mayor in 2007, the Justice Department (DOJ) announced Wednesday.

The 11-term Democrat, along with four associates, was indicted on 29 federal counts, including bribery, money laundering, falsification of records, and multiple counts of bank fraud, among other charges.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell said Fattah and the others "embarked on a wide-ranging conspiracy involving bribery, concealment of unlawful campaign contributions and theft of charitable and federal funds to advance their own personal interests.”

“When elected officials betray the trust and confidence placed in them by the public, the department will do everything we can to ensure that they are held accountable," Caldwell said in a statement. "Public corruption takes a particularly heavy toll on our democracy because it undermines people’s basic belief that our elected leaders are committed to serving the public interest, not to lining their own pockets.”Scissors-32x32.png

PA Democrat with links to former Gov. Ed Rendell one of the four indicted on corruption charges.

People may want to keep track of the Chaka Fattah corruption story, because this is a really interesting tidbit: “One of four people indicted with U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) 16% is known to Democrats statewide and politicians at the state Capitol: Herbert Vederman was a major contributor and fundraiser for former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell.” Most of the Pennsylvania Democrats involved in scandals of this type – and there are a large number of Pennsylvania Democrats that get involved in scandals; I’d say that there’s something in the water, except that I don’t want to listen to people start ranting about fracking – are generally limited in the scope of their chicanery. But somebody with ties to Eddie Rendell? …Well, that’s a different story.Scissors-32x32.png

I'm Shocked! But then I am so easily shocked.

I wonder if the Feds have made an offer to Chaka Fattah yet? I suspect there are a lot more fish in that pond.

Fattah Vows Re-election Bid Despite Racketeering Indictment

8/3/15

U.S. Rep Chaka Fattah is vowing to run for re-election next year despite a federal racketeering indictment and says he expects to resume his leadership position on a powerful congressional committee by year's end.

The 11-term Democrat said Monday he is "innocent of any and all of these allegations,'' telling reporters that he hasn't been involved in the misappropriation of funds as an elected official.

Fattah, 58, was indicted last week, accused of engaging in bribery, fraud, money laundering and other crimes involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Two of the four schemes alleged by prosecutors involve efforts to erase debts from Fattah's failed 2007 mayoral bid. Despite that, he said he had "no regrets'' about the mayoral run.

Pennsylvania attorney general arraigned on criminal charges

Natalie Schachar

Aug. 8 2015

Pennsylvania Atty. Gen. Kathleen Kane was arraigned Saturday on criminal charges including perjury and contempt of court, as officials throughout the state stepped up calls for her resignation. The charges stemmed from an investigation that accused the attorney general of orchestrating the illegal disclosure of information and then lying under oath to conceal her wrongdoing.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Kane offered one-word answers to the judge at the arraignment, and did not enter a plea during the proceedings. The newspaper also reported that Magisterial Judge Cathleen Kelly Rebar scheduled a preliminary hearing for Aug. 24 and set bail at $10,000 unsecured. “When someone entrusted with the solemn obligation to uphold the law deliberately violates the same laws she is sworn to uphold, we are all victims of this breach of the public trust,” Montgomery County Dist. Atty. Risa Vetri Ferman said in a statement Thursday, the day charges were filed against Kane.

In a criminal complaint, the district attorney accused Kane of retaliating against two former officials who shared information that led to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, which said Kane chose not to pursue the prosecutions of fellow Democratic politicians who had been caught in an undercover operation accepting bribes. Prosecutors say Kane used back channels and a political operative to release confidential grand jury information she believed would embarrass the two officials, then tried to cover up her tracks. A statement from the prosecutor's office listed the offenses as perjury, criminal conspiracy, official oppression, false swearing and obstructing administration of law or other governmental function.

But WAIT! There's More.....

Report: Pennsylvania AG Kathleen Kane is now facing an FBI inquiry

Gabriel Malor

August 20, 2015

The Federal Bureau of “Reaching Out” has launched an inquiry into Pennsylvania AG Kathleen Kane, says the Philadelphia Inquirer. Just two weeks ago, Kane was charged under state law for perjury, obstruction of justice, and abuse of office. The Inquirer says the federal probe is looking into additional wrongdoing:

The agents sought information about whether Kane suggested to union officials that she would look favorably on their contract if they supported her embattled chief of staff, sources said.

Investigators have also sought information about a trip Kane and several aides took to Haiti last year, and how it was paid for, according to the sources.

The chief of staff referred to above is Jonathan Duecker, who was accused of multiple unwanted sexual advances on women in the AG’s office. Kane allegedly agreed to give a Fraternal Order of Police lodge, which represented one of the accusers, preferential treatment in contract negotiations if the FOP would give Duecker a statement of support. The FOP declined and its contract lapsed. In June, Kane fired the director of labor relations who told her not to hire Duecker.

Kane was supposed to be the Democrats’ great big hope for Pennsylvania. Happily, the state now looks ripe for picking off in 2016. Kane’s preliminary hearing in her (state) criminal trial is Monday.

House panel details ethics allegations against Rep. Mike Honda

Carla Marinucci

Thursday, September 3, 2015

The Office of Congressional Ethics has found reason to believe that U.S. Rep. Mike Honda and his staff illegally mixed official and campaign business. It recommended that the House Ethics Committee further investigate the eight-term San Jose Democrat’s activities.

It’s a decision that’s sure to roil the competitive 2016 race for the seat Honda has held since 2001. Though the election is more than a year away, the ethics questions have created a serious political problem for Honda, 74, who is being challenged for the second time by Democrat Ro Khanna, 38, a former Obama trade representative who lost to Honda by fewer than 5,000 votes in 2014.

A 41-page report was released Thursday by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent bipartisan panel of private citizens that forwards its findings to the House Ethics Committee only when it finds “substantial reason” to believe a violation has occurred. The members voted unanimously to forward the findings and recommend that the investigation continue.

“Evidence obtained by the OCE indicates that Rep. Honda and members of his congressional staff used official resources for campaign purposes ... researched a potential campaign opponent, prepared materials for the campaign, used information from the congressional office for campaign purposes and discussed campaign matters during official meetings in the office and during official staff retreats,” the report stated. “Many of these activities appear to have taken place while on staff time.”

Hillary Clinton Held Fundraiser at Castellano's "White House"

Thursday, September 17, 2015

former_mansion_of_paul_castellano.jpg

Paul Castellano's White House, on Todt Hill.

Buzzfeed, among other newspapers and websites, reported that Hillary Clinton made an unannounced visit yesterday to Staten Island -- specifically to the White House, "a sprawling estate that earned the name during its time as a legendary mob palace in the 1980s."

Clinton was at Gambino boss Paul Castellano's old home to collect checks from supporters.

(Snip)

A Clinton spokesman declined to comment on the house’s history, or any aspect of the fundraiser, which is closed to the press. But the house has seen its share of intruders through the years. In 2011, Lusi’s family was the victim of a burglar who was found in a bedroom closet. Lusi ran for his gun- he has a New York City license for it- and chased the burglar out of his house, shooting at him as he left.
Back in 1983, federal agents planted several bugs in the house, which recorded 600 hours of Castellano talking freely.

Longtime Clinton Ally Charged in $1.3 Million UN Bribery Scheme

A Chinese businessman who was accused of illegally funneling money to the Democratic National Committee before Bill Clinton’s reelection has been charged in a $1.3 million bribery scheme.

ABC News reported that Ng Lap Seng, a Clinton ally who played a role in “Donorgate” ahead of the 1996 elections, was charged by federal prosecutors in New York for funneling more than half a million dollars to a former president of the United Nations General Assembly in an effort to build a multibillion-dollar U.N.-connected conference center.

The Macau real estate developer was charged along with five others, including ex-U.N. General Assembly head John Ashe and other Chinese businessmen, for participating in the bribery scheme, according to Reuters.

The federal complaint alleges Ng used intermediaries, including his interpreter Jeff Yin, to pay Ashe upwards of $500,000 to inform the U.N. secretary general that the conference center in Macau was needed.Scissors-32x32.png

Former assistant principal arrested in Hanover child porn bust

Alix Bryan

October 8, 2015

HANOVER, Va. – A former assistant principal, who was the state chairman for presidential candidate Martin O'Malley, and who most recently served as the vice-president of a Henrico-based financial firm, was arrested Thursday for possession of child pornography.

Michael C. Teegarden, 51, of Mechanicsville, was charged on two counts of child pornography after deputies executed a search warrant at his home in the 10000 block of Morning Dew Lane.

The search warrant was issued after Hanover Sheriff’s Office and the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (SOVA ICAC) Task Force received information that a home computer was being used for online trading of digital child pornography.

The Comeuppance of Creepy Obama Crony Kevin Johnson

The fit finally hit the shan for Sacramento mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson. His latest troubles are a stark reminder of the despicable White House role in railroading a vigilant government watchdog who red-flagged Johnson's corruption years ago.

Sports fans buzzed last week after ESPN shelved a documentary celebrating Johnson's efforts to keep the Sacramento Kings basketball team in his city. The public relations disaster came at the hands of the weekly Sacramento News & Review, which has published damning reports all year long on Johnson's use of public resources for personal gain -- along with sports website Deadspin, which has hammered Johnson over longtime allegations of the athlete-turned-Democrat point man's sleazy financial dealings and personal perversities.

The Sacramento News & Review, which is now being sued by Johnson, detailed how the mayor was using "city staff to screw around in the internal politics of the National Basketball Players Association. And having public employees help wage his power struggle for control of the National Conference of Black Mayors." Among Deadspin's damaging scoops: an exclusive interview with accuser Mandi Koba and video of her 1996 police interview in which the then-17-year-old victim graphically described repeated sexual molestation by Johnson, then 29 and a star member of the Phoenix Suns.Scissors-32x32.png
