A Culture of Life

a-culture-of-lifeAmerican Conservative:

Today marks the 41st anniversary of the national legalization of abortion in the United States. Thousands will march on the Mall and in the streets of Washington D.C. in protest of this decision, braving frigid temperatures and a blanket of snow to express their profound moral objection to Roe v. Wade and lamenting the estimated 55 million young lives that were legally extinguished since January 22, 1973.

The March for Life has become a rallying point for the pro-life movement, an annual pilgrimage of sorts, especially for young people who gather together to affirm a bedrock belief: the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. Even amid the overwhelming sense of tragedy and loss that draws them to D.C., in order, it is hoped, to effect a change, there is also a sense of affirmation and even celebration in the company of many others who are also so firmly committed, who gather to defend a belief that is today dismissed and mocked by cultural elites and cognoscenti (including the governor of New York, purportedly a Catholic), who find joy in the fellowship of so many companions who stand for life. As one friend posted on Facebook, “the Tribe is together.”

Amid the widespread sense of shared purpose, there is perhaps little time or inclination to reflect on a question: why gather, as Marchers do, in Washington D.C.? It is perhaps a question whose answer is self-evident: the March ends outside the Supreme Court, which continues to affirm Roe v. Wade as controlling precedent. It is the location of the president and the Senate, which ultimately has the power to make or confirm appointments to the Court. It is the nation’s media center, where such a protest has the best chance of being amplified to the nation. It is physically laid out to accommodate large protests, with its Mall almost seeming to have been designed for that purpose. It is the nation’s capital, where our elites congregate to make policy and steer the nation. Naturally, if people from all parts of the nation gather in protest of a national issue, it is not only the best place, but the only place.Scissors-32x32.png

No Truce With Evil. Ever.

It’s been another year. Another 3 million kids, more or less, killed legally in utero in this country. Time to take stock of things.

On the one hand, a substantial amount of progress has been made in the last 12 months. Numerous states have passed laws and regulations curtailing the practice of abortion. In the wake of the trial of Kermit Gosnell, numerous more have passed regulations requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as other outpatient surgery centers. In the wake of these regulations, numerous such clinics have closed, proving their worthlessness as purveyors of health.

On the other hand, the cause of life has in some ways suffered some political setbacks in the last year. The most pro-abortion President in history continued his attempt to trample religious liberty and expand taxpayer funding of abortion in clear violation of Federal Law. The always active and morally bankrupt fifth column within the GOP continues to scream that opposition to mass infanticide is a political loser and should be dropped from the party platform. “It is time for a truce,” we are regularly told.

Meanwhile, the other side rejects the very notion that a truce exists or even could be possible. Fabulist women in pink shoes are lionized and feted for literally no reason other than supporting third-trimester abortion on demand. Any common sense regulation of an abortion clinic is fought tooth and nail. Democrats and their allies in the media continue to paint everyone to the right of Wendy Davis on abortion as an extremist and an enemy to women in particular (at least to women who escape the womb).Scissors-32x32.png

Obama: 'Recommit' to abortion rights

President Obama on Wednesday marked the 41st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision with a statement calling on the nation to "recommit" to the principle "that every woman should be able to make her own choices about her body and her health."

"We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to protecting a woman’s access to safe, affordable health care and her constitutional right to privacy, including the right to reproductive freedom," Obama said.

"And we resolve to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, and continue to build safe and healthy communities for all our children. Because this is a country where everyone deserves the same freedom and opportunities to fulfill their dreams."

The president's statement comes amid a broader battle over abortion rights looming over this year's election cycle. In 2012, Democrats highlighted Republican candidates' opposition to abortion, as well as controversial comments made about rape, to accuse the GOP of waging a "war on women."

But some Republicans said this week that they will look to highlight Democratic positions on abortion rights as part of their electoral strategy.Scissors-32x32.png

Pope Francis tweets support for March for Life in Washington

Pope Francis tweeted support for the “March for Life” in Washington on Wednesday.

Tens of thousands of anti-abortion advocates are expected to descend on Capitol Hill for the 41st annual march. Participants are rallying against the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, which legalized abortion nationwide.

An adviser to Pope Francis, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, also marked the event by speaking at a Tuesday night Mass in the area.

The pope, whose full name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected as the Church’s leader in March and has been viewed as a revolutionary figure.Scissors-32x32.png

AS PRO-LIFERS MARCH ON WASHINGTON, OBAMA SAYS ABORTION HELPS WOMEN 'FULFILL THEIR DREAMS'

As winter storms barrage the east coast of the US and a wind chill temperature of minus eight degrees freezes DC, hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates are in the nation’s capitol for the 41st annual March for Life event on Wednesday.

Today marks the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Along with its companion Doe v. Bolton, abortion was legalized in all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, in the United States. Last year, it was estimated that 500,000 pro-life advocates demonstrated against abortion on the 40th anniversary of the crucial supreme court decision. The rallies will be covered on social media outlets, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, using 360 degree cameras for those who want to experience the events online.

On Wednesday, Pope Francis sent out a tweet supporting the pro-life marchers and offering his prayers: “I join the March for Life in Washington with my prayers. May God help us respect all life, especially the most vulnerable,” he tweeted.Scissors-32x32.png
