Every December, members of the US Armed Forces man the phones at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and track the movements of Santa Claus.

Here are five things to know about the Christmas tradition.

1. How can I follow Santa's path?

NORAD's Santa operations centre opens at 11am GMT on December 24. Children can get updates by phone, Facebook, Twitter and email, while an online map will give a minute by minute guide to Santa's progress. There are also smartphone apps available at app stores.
