Valin
Ricochet: Troy Senik 12/18/13 Among the pathologies of losing presidential campaigns, one of the more frequent failings is an inability to humanize the candidate. It's an understandable dynamic: allowing the public to see a little of what your man is really like requires a certain amount of vulnerability, something that makes political operatives profoundly nervous. The result is often that, after losing, the candidate gets reexamined out of the hothouse atmosphere of an election and turns out to be well, a pretty good guy. The last time we had a significant bout of this was after the 1996 election, when the public and the press suddenly awakened to the fact that Bob Dole, rather than being a dementia-ridden curmudgeon handing out apples to trick-or-treaters, was actually a graceful, funny guy. If the trailer for the new Netflix documentary on Mitt Romney, set to be released next month, is any indication, we're about to get a similar revision of our most recent nominee. Even most of us who sometimes found Romney lacking as a candidate felt he was one of the most decent human beings on the top of a national ticket for a long time. If this film can make that perception take hold on a wider scale, all the better. Still, one can't help but wonder what the effect would have been if the electorate got just a hint of this side of Mitt during the 2012 election.
