'Blizzarding:' Obama's plan to plow under GOP critics

2533869Washington Examiner:

This is no snow job: President Obama's grassroots organization has developed a plan called 'blizzarding' for his supporters to plow into neighborhoods and communities to sock GOP critics of Obamacare, gun control, and climate change as part of its "Action August."

While other elements of Obama's Organizing for Action are planning high-tech and expensive assaults in August on GOP lawmakers, the 'blizzarding' strategy calls on small groups or even individuals to promote the president's agenda with a door-to-door campaign followed by hyped up social media.

In email directions to supporters, OFA said "'blizzarding' means flyering or delivering postcards to help bring an important issue to the attention of more people and lawmakers in your community."Scissors-32x32.png

This is serious trivia time but weird how you wont see or use a word in ages and then , WHAM! there it is.

I was reading an old book by Walter P. Webb titled The Great Plains (1931)

Its all about people/pioneers/settlers living on the Great Plains and High Plains and the interactions that people and locale and environment - weather etc had on life and the resultant culture.

I loved finding that "the blizzard is the grizzly of the Plains". David Crockett first used the word to denote a blast, a devastating volley, either of shot or word.

In 1870 an Iowa newspaper editor used the word to denote a huge snow storm that had come through. From there newspapers and people picked up the word and it became popular to use for any big blowy storm. However Webb says that is kind of sad because a blizzard on the prairie plains is a different type of cruel animal.

As for its origin some think it is from a German word that means lightening strike. Who knows but now you know.
