The then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (and may she remain forever a former Speaker) took a lot of ridicule during the debate over the passage of Obamacare when she said that we’d have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it. I thought the critics had this all wrong. It was, in fact, the most intelligent thing she ever said, albeit unintentionally. What counts is, as Machiavelli put it, the “effectual truth” of the matter. And the effectual truth of modern American government is that Congress no longer enacts laws in the meaningful sense of the word. Instead, they pass wish lists, and delegate the actual lawmaking to unelected administrators.

Obamacare regs--so far

Simple test: if Congress passes a statute–even one that is 1,600 pages long like Obamacare, but the law can’t go into effect as written, it is not really a law at all. The simple proof is the photo here that Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office has released, showing the 20,000-plus pages of regulations issued so far for the implementation of Obamacare. ”Regulation” is just a multi-syllabic word for “law,” after all. The point is, administrators–the slightly nicer term for “bureaucrats”–now govern us much more than our elected lawmakers do. One almost wonders why we have elections at all. (Actually, many bureaucrats actually do wonder this.)

AP: Applying for ObamaCare benefits could be as daunting as doing your taxes

Erika Johnsen

So, apparently, we had to “pass it to find out what’s in it,” but finding out what’s in it first requires hiring an “army of counselors” to help everyone figure it all out. Awesome.

The Associated Press reports that, as the state exchanges through which all Americans will soon need to purchase insurance (if they don’t already have it) continue to develop, it’s increasingly clear that the process is going to be neither as fast nor as simple as the administration claimed. You don’t say:

The government’s draft application runs 15 pages for a three-person family. An outline of the online version has 21 steps, some with additional questions.

Seven months before the Oct. 1 start of enrollment season for millions of uninsured Americans, the idea that getting health insurance could be as easy as shopping online at Amazon or Travelocity is starting to look like wishful thinking.

At least three major federal agencies, including the IRS, will scrutinize your application. …

“When you combine those two processes, it is enormously time consuming and complex,” added Pollack. He’s calling for the government to simplify the form and, more important, for an army of counselors to help uninsured people navigate the new system. It’s unclear who would pay for these navigators.

Drafts of the paper application and a 60-page description of the online version were quietly posted online by the Health and Human Services Department, seeking feedback from industry and consumer groups. Those materials, along with a recent HHS presentation to insurers, run counter to the vision of simplicity promoted by administration officials.

FDA: Calorie-count mandate of ObamaCare “extremely thorny”

Ed Morrissey

March 13, 2013

Who could have seen this coming? Well, besides anyone who actually paid attention when it first became known that the ObamaCare law contained a hidden mandate that forced food-selling chains of 20 or more locations to post calorie counts of every item for sale, a fact that only came out after the bill’s passage. Three years later — three years? — the FDA is still trying to figure out how to implement it … and failing:

More and More fast food places are going with LCD screens in place of their bit printed screens partly because of this law. The screens are filled with so many numbers it is hard to find what you want to poison your body with.

They should just require a big sign out front, "eating here will kill you", and be done with it. Anyone who does not understand fast food is not good for you is probably not going to understand the fat and calorie numbers anyway, or worse think bigger numbers are more value for the dollar.

I think smokers are going to be surprised what the O'Care bill has in store for them.

Deep within the brain of most humans, resides the Moron chip. This chip, when working properly, is constantly observing the person's behavior. In the event of dangerous or stupid behavior, it will go into alarm mode. Historically, this chip may be what helped the smarter cavemen to not become "food" or "stuff on a rock".

Some people obviously have a Moron Chip Failure. We call many of these people.....Democrats.
