Draggingtree
Human Events: Rubio: Conservatives should lead on immigration By: Adam Tragone 1/31/2013 05:56 PM Sen. Marco Rubio told Human Events that while his conservative critics may have bad memories about past efforts to reform immigration, the GOP should press ahead with its own agenda – and not wait for the president to act. Human Events: What is your response to conservative critics, such as Ann Coulter, who called the statement of principles from the Gang of Eight the same as amnesty? Marco Rubio: I recognize and understand that people have bad memories and bad feelings about past efforts to reform immigration, but what I’ve done is I’ve just identified a problem and an issue that was going to emerge with or without the president, who clearly telegraphed his intention to raise this issue. And I just feel that conservatives are better having our own solutions than waiting for the president to come up with one and simply responding. And I’ve tried to come up with a solution that recognizes the reality of the fact that we have 11 million people here who are in violation of our immigration laws, but they are here and most of them are here for the rest of their lives. And that we need to deal with it, but we need to deal with it in a way that’s fair to people who are trying to come legally and have come legally [in the] past and also in a way that doesn’t encourage illegal immigration in the future. Draggingtree
Immigration Bait and Switch February 1, 2013 A group of eight senators -- four Democrats and four Republicans -- announced Monday their outline for immigration reform. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Michael Bennet (D-CO), John McCain (R-AZ), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) released their Bipartisan Framework for Immigration Reform, which has four prongs: 1. A "tough but fair path to citizenship ... contingent upon securing our borders"; 2. reform the current legal immigration system; 3.expand and strengthen the employment verification system to prevent the hiring of illegal workers; 4. and improve the process for admitting future workers. At first read, it sounds reasonable. The sudden push is thanks to the election. Republicans are facing the fact of once again losing the Hispanic vote in a blowout and are looking for love in all the wrong places. And we've seen this movie before. In the 1986 amnesty (and similar legislation passed in the 60's and 70's), enforcement was promised and never delivered. So here we are, 27 years later, hearing the same promises -- legal status first in exchange for promised (if that) enforcement later. Schumer admitted, "On Day One of our bill, the people without status who are not criminals or security risks will be able to live and work here legally." Once illegals obtain even provisional legal status, it's game over, and the idea of it being "contingent upon securing our borders" is just window dressing. http://patriotpost.us/editions/16538
Draggingtree
What's Behind Rubio's 'Full Circle Back' On Immigration? by David Welna February 01, 2013 6:07 PM Listen to the Story (this link below just goes to the page you will have to scroll down to the article) All Things Considered 4 min 9 sec Playlist Download Marco Rubio has been the junior senator from Florida for barely two years, but he's already considered a likely 2016 presidential contender. The 41-year-old Republican's political star rose still higher this week when he joined a bipartisan group of senators offering a path to citizenship to millions of unauthorized immigrants. It's the latest in a series of shifts on immigration by Rubio, the Miami-born son of Cuban exiles who ran for Senate in 2010 as a Tea Party-backed conservative, rejecting a so-called earned path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, which at the time he called "code for amnesty." But Rubio is no longer calling it amnesty. "This allows people the access to make their status at this moment legal, if they meet certain benchmarks. And, ultimately, to have access to the regular opportunity that anybody else in the world would have, to get a green card," http://www.npr.org/b...ion?ft=1&f=1001
Valin
“Send all the illegals home!” Michael Reagan says GOP needs to stop making outrageous statements on immigration. Michael Reagan explained that his father and former president Ronald Reagan supported amnesty for illegals back in the ’80s even though he ended up getting duped on securing the border. And Reagan says we still need to live up to that promise that was made to his father and secure the border because history has now shown us that more illegals just keep crossing the border, a concern his dad had when he made the deal in the ’80s. But beyond that, he also says that the voices we are hearing from the Republican party surround outrageous statements like “round up the 11 million and send them home” or “send the kids that were brought here illegally by their parents back home”. Reagan says we need to find a right way to deal with this problem, but we don’t need to be talking about it in an angry way, but in a more inclusive way. He says the idea that illegals are just going to come forward and be shipped home is stupid on its face. He says that’s not going to happen and something else needs to be done. Draggingtree
Patterico’s Pontifications 2/2/2013 Obama Courts Illegal Immigrant Welfare Dependents in Violation of Law Filed under: General— Patterico @ 11:30 pm Obama is making citizens out of illegal immigrants who have been on welfare, and ignoring the fact that they have been on welfare, in defiance of federal law: It is an explicit and unambiguous tenet in federal law that those granted entry into the U.S. must be able to support themselves financially. But the Obama Administration has aggressively defied this strict federal statute. What are new promises worth when existing law is unilaterally waived? Last year, the Ranking Members of Budget, Finance, Judiciary, and Agriculture Committees wrote an oversight letter to Secretaries Napolitano and Clinton that said in part: http://patterico.com/2013/02/02/obama-courts-illegal-immigrant-welfare-dependents-in-violation-of-law/
pollyannaish
Once again I have to ask...is this really the biggest problem we have right now? Could at least ONE person in government focus on getting our economy back on track. Please? The percentage of able bodied men working in the US right now is the lowest it has been since 1948. We are in serious economic trouble. Focus!!

I am trying hard to think of the person/persons who would lead the charge on the economy, can't pull up anyone -- I wish Jeff Sessions would take the lead as most of the time he's on track with the thoughts of most Americans . Of course I know others but he sticks out in my mind.
pollyannaish
Exactly Draggingtree! Someone must step forward with a clear, common-sense big picture idea that can articulate it well and have the ability to implement.
