Gingrich to Hold Post-Caucus Press Conference

2/4/12

Instead of the traditional election night party, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will hold a press conference after the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, raising new speculation about his future in the race.

An e-mail sent to reporters on Saturday morning set the Las Vegas press conference for 11 p.m. to midnight Eastern time. It will be held at the Venetian, a hotel run by Sheldon Adelson, who has donated millions of dollars to the pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future.

Gingrich has had a rough time on the trail ahead of the Nevada Caucus, the first presidential contest in the West. Sources in or close to his campaign gave reporters incorrect information that Donald Trump would endorse Gingrich (he endorsed rival Mitt Romney). Gingrich also missed a meeting with the Silver State's popular governor, Brian Sandoval, a Rick Perry supporter who was viewed as a possible Gingrich endorsement after Perry dropped out and endorsed the former House Speaker, according to The New York Times.

I must admit that I will be disappointed if Gingrich drops out. I suspect that is not what it is about, but who knows. Frankly, the Trump thing is about as meaningless as a box of rocks. He really has added some life to this primary. And some fantastic articulation of ideas. If he is the winner, Romney could be a great asset in running interference on the personal side. If Romney wins, he will have Gingrich to thank for making him much stronger and better vetted. He needs to ask Gringrich to help him with solid ideas and the articulation of those. And to help him shore up his conservative flank.

I think Gringrich is just mixing it up and it won't be about dropping out. Nothing he does is conventional. I actually like that.

@pollyannaish

If he does, Rick Santroum can look forward to being carpet bombed by the Romney campaign. Because IMP Romney can't win in a debate of ideas. The only way he wins is just tear down the opponent...by any mean he can.

All I've seen from him 30 second sound bytes (I love America, I'm in favor of good things, I'm against bad things) and negative ads.

You add that to (once again IMO) I don't think he can beat Obama.

Romney takes big early lead in Nevada voting

Early vote results reported by CNN showed Romney grabbing a big lead. With 3 percent of precincts counted, Romney had 52 percent, well ahead of U.S. Representative Ron Paul's 20 percent. Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich was in third with 19 percent and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum was last with 9 percent.

A Nevada victory would be Romney's second win in a row and his third in the first five contests in the state-by-state battle to find a Republican challenger to President Barack Obama in November's general election.

Two polls taken this week in Nevada showed the former Massachusetts governor with a lead of at least 20 points or more over Gingrich after recapturing his front-runner status with a convincing win in Florida on Tuesday.

Gingrich Patron Could Have a Plan B: Romney

LAS VEGAS — Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino executive keeping Newt Gingrich’s presidential hopes alive, has relayed assurances to Mitt Romney that he will provide even more generous support to his candidacy if he becomes the Republican nominee, several associates said in interviews here.

Scissors-32x32.png

Sheldon is committed to keeping him in the race as long as he wants to stay in,” said Fred Zeidman, a top fund-raiser for Mr. Romney and a longtime friend of Mr. Adelson. “But any time that Newt decides to get out of the race, he would devote his energy and money to the overriding issue, which is beating Barack Obama.”

Underscoring Mr. Adelson’s devotion to that larger cause, he was among the conservative political financiers on hand last weekend for the twice-yearly gathering of the billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch near Palm Springs, Calif., where the Kochs and their like-minded colleagues discussed their efforts to ensure Mr. Obama’s defeat.

His connection with Mr. Gingrich goes back years, built on a shared passion for protecting Israel. But associates of Mr. Adelson said that he was concerned about the Obama agenda more broadly and that his support for Mr. Gingrich’s candidacy was rooted in a belief that his lofty ideas and forceful approach were right for the challenging times.

Mr. Gingrich, whose campaign treasury is severely depleted, is being advised by his inner circle to spend the weeks leading up to Super Tuesday on March 6 resting up, getting Mr. Romney’s attacks out of his head and recalibrating his campaign message to highlight his positive ideas.

Long article but interesting.

That is interesting. Goes to show that the Voting against Obama block is well financed coming out of the primaries.

So is it a wrap for Mitt? Any chance of Newt or anyone denying him the nomination?

I don't see a wrap for anyone at this point..but yes, probably.

Mitt won NV in 2008 as well so not a big win here.

It will probably be Mitt. Who will he choose as running mate if so?

Mitt is probably the one that has the best chance of beating Obama. That is the goal of this election.

It is not over yet so who knows.

Newt's presser was painful. I think I have firmly made up my mind now.

I quit watching to watch big bang theory. What happened that made it painful.

@Rheo

Sorry, I just saw this.

I would Rheo, but I think you are more important to us here at TRR.

The Presidency would be a downgrade for you.
