WestVirginiaRebel
Fox News:Is the traditional 100-watt incandescent light bulb about to go the way of the Tyrannosaurus Rex?Some Republicans on Capitol Hill hope not. They want to overturn the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, signed by then-President George W. Bush. The law requires all 100-watt incandescent light bulbs to be almost 30-percent more energy efficient by Jan. 1, 2012.Since that means higher production costs, manufacturers in America have stopped making the traditional bulbs. Some consumers have already started stockpiling the old-model bulbs, complaining that the replacements cast a unattractive light compared to the warmth of incandescent bulbs.Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul told an administration official at a recent hearing that it's "insulting" for the government to tell consumers what light bulbs they can buy, because the government believes it “know what’s best for me.”South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint said in a statement that, "Americans are fully capable of choosing the best way to light their own homes and what best fits the needs and budget of their families ... it's clear the 'nanny state' mentality has gotten out of control in Washington."________If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And if you get the new bulbs, don't break 'em...
Pepper
As much as some GOP people speak loudly, they don't have the numbers to get rid of the CFL. Because the others are probably too busy stuffing their re-election piggy banks with contributions by CFL manufacturers.
clearvision
There is a new kid in town: ESL Light Bulb Assuming this company can manufacture in volume, this is a clear winner over CFL. Dimmable, HI Power factor, long life, etc. It works for me because I have dimmable fixtures and CFL/LED's won't work. Still a little expensive vs. cfl but cheaper than LED. nickydog
Like Valin, I continue to buy the old style lt. bulbs, storing up a growing stash every time I go grocery shopping.
Argyle58
My wife is kinda hacked off because I co-opted a whole cabinet for light bulbs. It's filled top to bottom with incandescant bulbs, mostly 60w, but at least some in 25, 40, 75 and 100. I like the light better and don't like the thought of having to call a hazmat team for a broken light bulb. I understand that the CFL bulbs cost less to operate, but, like other folks around here I prefer the quality of light to CFLs and LEDs. I found no real discernable difference in my electric bill during my brief forray into CFLs and have concluded that the CFL/LED craze of little consequence, except for lip service. pollyannaish
Incandescent lights RULE! In my interior design projects, I've found that replacing CFLs and LEDs with real light bulbs makes people like their existing interior design MUCH better right out the gate. They go from "I hate everything" to a more selective approach to redecorating. Often, it's not that they don't like their sofa...it's that the don't like their sofa under CFLs. I HATE how long it takes for CFLs to warm up too. As Dennis Miller said I don't work hard to get ahead in this country so that my home can be lit like a soviet stairwell. I have a gigantic box of real lightbulbs. I think I'm going to kick my collecting into high gear.
