Breitbart:

A majority of Americans say they are in favor of same-sex marriage, a new poll found, reflecting shifting US sentiment on the issue.

Fifty-three percent of Americans support gay marriage, up more than 20 percentage points from a low of 32 percent in 2004, the poll of 1,005 adults conducted over four days last week for ABC News and the Washington Post found.

Gary Langer of Langer Research Associates, which produced the poll, called the findings a "milestone result that caps a dramatic, long-term shift in public attitudes."

It was the first time that the ABC News-Washington Post poll, which has asked the same question since 2003, had shown a majority of American favoring same-sex marriage, the Post said.

It said other polls conducted by Pew Research Center, the Associated Press and CNN had found similar trends.

Five years ago, only a majority of people younger than 30 supported gay marriage, but now majorities of those in their 30s and 40s do, the poll shows.

But, overall, Americans are still divided over gay marriage, with as many adults strongly opposed to same-sex unions as support them, and opposition to same-sex unions still strong among conservatives.
________

I think it's more accurate to say that most Americans either support the right to gay marriage or just don't care, but IMO it shows why social issues often don't get much traction outside of "the choir," so to speak.

ABC and the Washington Compost are push polling again for Obama.

A survey of 1,005 people, especially "adults," would not convince me the sky is blue.

It's hard to know what people really support on this issue. I think there should be certain domestic partnership laws that protect people who have lived together for long periods of time from damage should the situation change. This could be for people in gay relationships, straight non married relationships and even siblings. Basically, if two people share a residence and contribute to the running of that household, they be named as people who can make decisions on behalf of the other and share the value of the assets fairly.

It should be a straight up law that protects those types of situations and it should make no moral judgement as to the nature of the relationships they're in. I think out of wedlock relationships of any kind should not be used to financially abuse another person and the government has a reasonable role in preventing this from happening.

And then marriage, which should have the specific function within society of raising children, should be a different thing. Moreover, once the government says anyone can marry...it puts pressure on religious institutions to accept things that are CLEARLY against their theology and things get dicey. In addition, it causes real problems for companies that provide "married couples" certain privileges such as health care. No one should be forced to support something they think is wrong. Companies can provide domestic partnership benefits if they want...but they should not be forced to by naming it marriage and then requiring everyone to pay.

I would also add: It is my belief that young people under the age of about 40, religious or not, overwhelmingly support gay marriage. I find it shocking honestly. Very, very devout young people whom you would suspect know what the Bible have to say are so romantically caught up in the notion that being gay is just a different way of being straight they don't understand what the big deal is.

Of all the things I've been surprised about in my life, I have to admit this is probably the biggest. There have definitely been repercussions to the sexual revolutions...the vast majority of them are not good.

None of this is surprising. Any society where God and His Laws, His Precepts and Doctrines as revealed in the Written Word of Hebrew and Christian Testaments are neglected and relegated to the man made forums of man -made "religion" then the intellect and science become gods. Social ethics and social justice and "human nature" replace the Personal God and relationship and communion with Him.

This is humanism at its finest and ultimately purely secular humanism will triumph.

Not in any church I've been too.

Speaking as a very senior citizen, I think the polls start out with an agenda to prove.

I remember when it was proven that studies showing AIDS was just as prevalent in the straight society was just as bad as in the gay community. Studies showed that stories were generated by the gay community to gain support for research for a cure for AIDS.

Not exactly the same thing, but shows that agendas can be propagated by a willing press.

It may be a west coast thing. In general, there are probably parts of the country that are far more liberal than others and that includes the folks in church. Who knows.

Oh I'm sure in the liberal cities and states you will find that to be true, but if queer "marriage" was so popular, it would not go down to defeat every single time it is on the ballot, especially in California. No one who goes to church and actually believes the Bible is going to support it. These people who go to church now and then and call themselves Christians, but support every immoral cause out there, will be surprised come judgment day.
