Jewish couple and three children killed in West Bank

(Reuters) - A Jewish couple and three of their children were stabbed to death in bed in a West Bank settlement in what Israeli officials said Saturday was an attack by one or more Palestinians who broke into their home.

Israeli troops set up roadblocks and were searching the area around the Jewish religious settlement of Itamar, near the Palestinian city of Nablus, for the killer or killers.

In a televised speech, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed shock that the parents and three of their children -- including a baby -- were "brutally murdered on Sabbath eve while sleeping."

"I instructed our security forces to make all efforts to find the murderers and we will not rest until we find them and bring them to justice," he said.

The office of President Barack Obama said: "There is no possible justification for the killing of parents and children in their home. We call on the Palestinian Authority to unequivocally condemn this terrorist attack."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later put out a statement condemning "all acts of violence against civilians, regardless of who carried them out and their motives."

Netanyahu, who spoke with Abbas by phone, said the statements by the Palestinian leadership were not enough and that they must take action to end incitement against Israelis in Palestinian schools, mosques and media.

On its website, Hamas has addressed the murder of the Fogel family on the West Bank. Actually, as Al Mutarjim notes at Big Peace, Hamas talks about the murders twice, once on the English portion of its website and again in Arabic. In English, Hamas denies responsibility for the murders and distances itself from them:

 

Palestinian National Movement Hamas official Ezzat Al-Rashak said that the movement is not responsible for the murder of the five family members from the Itamar settlement.

 

Al-Rashak confirmed that harming children is not part of Hamas' policy, nor is it the policy of the resistance factions.

 

He also confirmed that the possibility that the incident was carried out by settlers for criminal motives should not be ruled out.

 

The message in Arabic, however, is quite different. As translated by Al Mutarjim, Hamas wrote, in part:

 

Five Zionist usurpers were killed the morning of Saturday, 12 March 2011, in a knife-stabbing carried out by a Palestinian in the usurper (settlement) of Itamar east of the city of Nablus.

 

Our correspondent in Nablus reported that a Palestinian mujahid was able to break into the usurper (settlement) of "Itamar" south of Nablus in the occupied (West) Bank, and stabbed five Zionist usurpers.

Townhall: Media Coverage Distorts Issues in "Settler" Murders

Distorted media coverage of the recent terrorist assault on the Israeli community of Itamar compounded the pain of an unspeakably brutal crime.

 

On Friday night shortly after 10 PM, just hours after the commencement of the Jewish Sabbath, two knife-wielding intruders broke into the modest one story home of the Fogel family, murdering the mother and father in their bed along with their three month old baby girl. They then stormed one of the children’s rooms, slashing to death two boys, ages three and eleven. Two other sleeping children – aged two and eight – managed to survive when the terrorists fled the scene before they entered the other bedroom. The oldest child, a twelve year old daughter, also escaped death because of her participation in a Sabbath program of her religious youth group. When she returned to her home, she discovered the mutilated and bloody bodies of her parents, her two brothers and her infant sister. Tracks from the scene of the crime led directly to the nearby Palestinian village of Awarta. Later, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claimed credit for the killings (though ultimately retracting that claim) and crowds in Gaza took to the streets in celebration, receiving sweets from the Hamas authorities to honor the vile deed.

 

In its initial report on the incident, CNN ran the headline, “Israeli Family of 5 Killed in ‘terror attack,’ military says” By placing quotation marks around the phrase “terror attack” the cable network cast doubt on that obvious characterization of the incident. As one Israeli press liaison aptly demanded, “If this is not a terror attack, what is?” By citing the “military” in the headline, CNN also seemed to suggest a martial dimension to the incident—though the only connection with soldiers involved the post-murder search for the terrorist perpetrators.

The rise of anti-semitism, has been ignored by most print & electronic media. I see only this aspect:

 

It is a continuing semantic attack on all culture, by denying the accurate representation of facts, through correctly used terms & words [such as "terrorist attacks" now being called "man-made disasters";] and a biased political program, used to blur an ancient evil.

 

No doubt that the Mossad will track the killers, and in the coming weeks or months, an appropriate response will be made by Israel. When it happens, I predict that any targets will be "innocent Palestinian civilians," at a wedding or a birthday celebration.
