Geee
CNSnews:Tokyo (AP) - A powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's history slammed the eastern coast Friday, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. A local news report said at least 15 people were killed. The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along the 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of the country's eastern shore were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter in the sea off the northeastern coast.A tsunami warning was issued for dozens of Pacific countries, as far away as Chile. clearvision
They had been predicting 6foot surge in Hawaii. Looks like they got 1 to 2 foot. Best tweet of the morning: Hawaii escaped major damage except for the state record archives which was totally destroyed... Video from Japan is surreal. Pepper
One upside to this catastrophe: MSM might focus attention on the tragedy instead of the renta-mob scene in Wisconsin over the weekend. Clearvision On the photos and video, it seems unbelievable.

Casino67
NHK is streaming live TV. All Japanese, but visually interesting. NHK Fox just announced that the pressure in the nuclear cooling plant is increasing there. Has there ever been a complete meltdown in any nuclear plant before? NHK Fox just announced that the pressure in the nuclear cooling plant is increasing there. Has there ever been a complete meltdown in any nuclear plant before? The 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine. The pile suffered a total meltdown which caused the plant to explode. Experts say that this can't happen to Western designed reactors, though. In my memory, as unreliable as it is, I didn't realize that Chernobyl was a meltdown. Thought it was just some stupid accident caused by Russian construction methods. Not to be mean, but Japan has had a bad history of nuclear radiation. They certainly don't need a Chernobyl type incident. UPDATE: I just clicked on NHK is now broadcasting in English. The Chernobyl disaster was made worse by the shoddy construction methods employed by the USSR. Western reactors all incorporate a containment dome that would have minimized the release of contamination. Soviet reactors did not use this safety feature, which resulted in most of the radioactive material in the pile to become airborne, making a amount of the area down wind from the reactor uninhabitable for decades to come. Casino67
Fox reporting that the pressure is one and a half times normal. Japan is going to release radioactive vapor to reduce pressure. Thousands have been evacuated. Up to 80k people dead or missing. And two trains are missing? I was in a tremendous earthquake back in the 60's while stationed there. It was an experience I am happy to never have experienced again. So many things were happening all at once we didn't have time to be afraid until it was over, that was when we started shaking. Casino67
Japan wants everyone within a six plus mile radius of the nuclear site to evacuate. The pressure continues to build. NHK is back to English at the moment.
NCTexan
I've been in touch with some for the folks (both American and Japanese) whom I work with and they are bunked down in a corporate conference room in downtown Tokyo. The Japanese can't make it home and the Americans can't get back to their hotel. The nuke situation can get very bad, very quickly I imagine. Stay tuned. clearvision
Not that this compares to what is going on in Japan, but here are the effects in Kailua-Kona HI. 2nd person filming was crazy. This is about 2000' from my beach front house there at 5' above sea level. The house is just around the side of the bay from where this occurred. The water came up over a small beach wall in front of the house, but did not get to the pool, garage, etc. Obviously being at the front of a bay versus in the bay makes a big difference. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Wh0_yNJhc&feature=player_embedded House Map
