Valin
Daily Caller :Steven Nelson 2/16/11No word yet on whether protesters will topple Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker, but the rhetoric against Walker portrays him as a petty tyrant in need of a Cairo-styled comeuppance.“Mini-Mubarak” is the latest label being thrown at Walker, who has infuriated labor unions with a proposal to end collective bargaining for state employees. Protesters in the state capitol are vehemently opposing Walker’s effort. Walker has said that he will not negotiate with unions because the state is “broke” and has nothing to offer.(Snip)From Yesterday
Valin
Get a peek into the future (Snip) Walker has presented a bill aimed at erasing a $137 million deficit in the current budget. His plan would remove collective bargaining rights for most of the 175,000 state and local government employees, restricting most workers to negotiate only over salary. The plan also requires union workers to pay half the cost of their pensions and at least 12.6 percent of their health insurance premiums. Walker has argued that the changes are needed to overcome this year’s deficit, and a far deeper hole anticipated for the next two-year budget. If his proposal fails, the governor has said he would likely have to lay off about 1,500 state workers by June 30 to make up for the current budget shortfall. But the bill is not expected to fail. Republicans, which includes Walker, hold a sizable majority in the Assembly (57-38-1), and Tuesday, the president of the Wisconsin state Senate said there are enough votes among his fellow GOP members to pass the plan.
