Fox6 News:

WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE —
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has shut down the project to build a high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison. The DOT issued an e-mail to all contractors working on the high-speed rail project not to proceed any further. Intially there was confusion in Madison with key lawmakers left out of the loop with Governor Doyle's decision to sotp the project.

One week prior to the order to stop construction, state officials signed a little publicized agreement with federal authorities to ensure all $810M set aside for high-speed rail.

Governor-elect calls the full reversal a victory. In a statement Scott Walker said, "Since learning about the state's agreement with the federal government we have been exploring all legal options to stop the train from moving forward, and we believe this is a step in the right direction. We are continuing to work with members of congress on redirecting this money to fixing our crumbling roads and bridges."snip

Geee! High speed train is a boondoggle and a sop to certain sectors. You can't even make an ordinary train connection today from a given point A to points B and beyond. I just looked at December costs:

you can take a train from Oregon to South Carolina and spend $500 and FOUR days (106 hr, 56 min) or

you can fly it in 13hr 50min for $360.

Geee!

Was this the proposed high-speed link from Milwaukee to The Gobbler?

Since The Gobbler shut down, it's probably is harder to justify the rail project in these tough economic times.

NCTexan!

Wow.

Designed in the late 1960s by Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin architect Helmut Ajango for local turkey farmer Clarence Hartwig and opened in 1967, The Gobbler Supper Club (later renamed the Round Stone Restaurant) was styled to resemble a turkey's head when viewed from overhead.

Me too!!

Scot Walker said during the campaign that after the high speed rail was built it would cost Wisconsin between 7 to 11 million to maintain it every year and that doesn't even count that there is not going to be ridership for it to pay for itself.
