Casino67
Politico.com:Alice Rivlin's plan would include cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age. | ReutersPresident Barack Obama’s already got problems refereeing his party’s bitter family feud over deficits. Now, Alice Rivlin is about to make that job a lot tougher.Rivlin is an influential voice in Democratic circles but has developed a reputation as something of a fiscal scold, who says government’s largesse isn’t unlimited. Obama picked her for his presidential deficit commission. And right at the moment when liberals are telling the president to keep his hands off Social Security, Rivlin’s about to announce a plan to fix the deficit that’s expected to include some of her past prescriptions for the problem. pollyannaish
Doggonit! Someone get out the money tree! They really think we're dumb, don't they. We all know we're going to have to fix this somehow.
Stella
Doggonit! Someone get out the money tree! They really think we're dumb, don't they. We all know we're going to have to fix this somehow. Why does everything have to be done on the backs of seniors? Obama really has a thing about the elderly. He wants to kill them off with his death panels and has funded the HCR out of Medicare. Now they are talking about tampering with social security. Social security has been funded by working people all their working lives. Now, they want to raise the age and do means testing. How about if we start first with all the welfare programs and all the money being given to people that are not here legally or even citizens of our country. How about all the money being given to cities across the country to build schools for all the illegals. Leave the Seniors alone until you have addressed the other places where people who have not contributed are receiving (I don't mean you, Polly, but the Obama administration)
Pepper
Just remembered that I need to re-up my annual donation to the local spay and neuter clinic.

Well, actually at the moment you do mean me, since I'm drawing unemployment. But I take no offense. I am 45. At about 35 I came to understand that I will probably work in some capacity until I die. It's just the way it is. SS is the biggest ponzi scheme ever invented and totally messed up by the fact that we are having fewer children as we become more educated. But I agree with you. We must fulfill our promises to the generations that are relying on them. But those of us who are younger will have to come to terms with the fact that we have a choice: Suck it up and take the "it's not fair" position to fix the problem...or pass it on to our children. I've decided that I'd rather see my generation swallow the bitter pill and leave the country intact for the kids.

I have never minded unemployment benefits for the same reason I get upset about tampering with SS - people paid into the system. You are getting back what you and your employer paid in with your present situation in mind. When my husband and I were in our 20's, we never believed social security would be there for us either. We are in the first wave of Baby Boomers and knew when our generation hit retirement age, the system couldn't keep paying out. We actually would be quite content if they gave us back all the money we paid into it. They don't even have to give us interest. Otherwise, it was just another super duper tax on all of us. Rheo
So as I'm reading through this 3 page article....I notice this: Borosage says that one of the sponsors of Rivlin’s panel, hedge fund manager Pete Peterson, is an outspoken supporter of privatizing Social Security (The lead sponsor is the Bipartisan Policy Center) --- Now, Borosage is a progressive and editor at The Nation, but what really surprised me what the Bipartisan Policy Center is a supporter of privatizing Social Security....with none other than Tom Daschle.....who has been Obama's guide from the beginning....and he is non partisan? Ha. Okay, it does have Bob Dole, Howard Baker and George Mitchell. But Daschle a non partisan and supporting privatizing. Hmmm. carry on.
