Bahrain has detailed a Shi'ite coup plot in the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom.

Officials said the Interior Ministry has determined that a range of Shi'ite opposition elements planned a violent campaign to destabilize Bahrain. They said the 23 detainees were part of a network that was supported by a foreign country, believed to be Iran.

"This sophisticated terrorist network with operations inside and outside Bahrain has undertaken and planned a systematic and layered campaign of violence and subversion aimed squarely at undermining the national security of Bahrain," Bahrain prosecutor Abdul Rahman Al Sayed said on Sept. 5.
