Israel was said to have assassinated a senior military adviser to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

A book by two senior Israeli analysts asserted that an Israeli sniper squad killed Syrian Gen. Mohammed Suleiman in 2008. The analysts have published a book titled "Mossad: The Great Operations," that said the snipers were ordered by the Mossad to kill Suleiman to stop Syria's nuclear weapons cooperation with North Korea.

"The two emerged from the water to the shore, moved closer to the house, aimed their rifles and shot Suleiman simultaneously," authors Michael Bar-Zohar and Nissim Mishal wrote. "The hit was lethal."

Bar-Zohar, regarded as close to President Shimon Peres, has been deemed the unofficial chronicler of Israel's intelligence community. Mishal has been regarded as a leading Israeli journalist.
