When D.C. 'Wisdom' Is Wrong

Perhaps you've seen a science show on Discovery Channel called MythBusters that explores urban legends or misconceptions and, by show's end, typically debunks them. Politics could use a program like this.

Much of the accepted wisdom in Washington is based on myths. These myths regarding politics feed misleading media coverage and attribute false cause and effect to events and decisions. To get a handle on the coming midterm elections (and after that the 2012 presidential election), let's look at a few of these myths and "bust" them, as they say on the show.


If you had to pick one thing that is most significant in a campaign, it would be message, not money.


First, there's the belief that national elections are about issues or the candidates' personalities. In fact, they are about neither. Stands on issues and personal qualities are important insofar as they align with the core values that Americans use in making important decisions in their lives, including how they vote. These core values include compassion, strength, empathy, and authenticity.snip
