While those of us who follow these issues read reports and news accounts breathlessly detailing China’s buildup of missiles opposite Taiwan, we seldom hear if Taiwan is doing anything to boost its missile defenses; although we hear a lot about the never ending drama surrounding the F-16 aircraft sale.

As would be expected, Taiwan is building up a “missile defense shield” in response to those 1,600 some odd Chinese missiles pointed in its direction. The latest addition will be six Patriot III batteries and a long-range early warning radar system, according to this news report; the defenses are expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Now, what Taiwan really needs is a bunch of Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) units, like the units we’re selling to the UAE. Although, it sounds like Lockheed Martin is having trouble building the missiles fast enough.

We know the Chicoms don't have the capability to invade Taiwan, so their next solution is to bomb them into submission with missiles. The bad news for the Chicoms is that Taiwan has nukes, and will use them.

They'll lose in a knock down-drag out nukefest, but they'll kick the Chicoms economy back by around thirty years. That also doesn't account for what happens if a US Navy ship gets hit in the crossfire. That's when the carriers and Tridents come into play...

According to estimates, the forces available to the PLA for the invasion of Taiwan include about 50,000 troops of the 31st Group Army deployed in Nanjing Military Region. The PLA could reshuffle in a short period some of the "Rapid Reaction Forces" of other military regions, which along with strategic reserves would bring perhaps another 250,000 troops to the area, according to estimates of the Taiwan Ministry of Defense. An amphibious assault but the PLA has a low possibility of success because even without U.S. assistance, the Taiwanese have the advantage of defending the island. I would like to Taiwanese to invest in diesel submarines because in the waters surrounding Taiwan, diesel submarines would be useful in offensive operations.

There's no doubt they have the troops, but they don't have the amphibious capability to get them to Taiwan because the ROC and USN ships will sink the ships they do have in minutes.

Also, don't forget the carriers and attack subs that totally outclass anything the Chicoms have in their arnsenal. And there are the Tridents... B)

Tridents carry SSBN.The Tridents usually patrol in the Northern Pacific and Indian Oceans. They are locations for optimal launching points. There are SSGN(modified Ohio Class) which carries Tomahawks. The SSGN are modified Trident submarines. Virginia Class or Los Angeles attack submarines carry their fair load of Tomahawks. The Taiwanese need to continue their investments in jets and their navy.
