Geee
Washington Examiner: Obama: I saved Ford by bailing out its competitorsBy: DAVID FREDDOSOOnline Opinion Editor08/05/10 2:15 PM EDTThey didn’t take his bailout money, but the president claims credit all the same:The year before I took office, this industry lost hundreds of thousands of jobs. Sales plunged 40 percent — 40 percent. When the financial crisis hit and this great recession hit, that collided with an industry that for a long time had put off some hard choices, had put off adapting to changing times. And we had to face a hard, unimaginable reality, which was two of the Big Three automakers — GM and Chrysler — were on the brink of liquidation. If that had happened, more than 1 million jobs could have been lost, and that would have been a devastating blow to the entire economy. Now, Ford was in better financial shape and was able to weather the storm without federal assistance. (Applause.) That’s a testament to the hard work you all do and the choices this company made. But I don’t have to tell you, and your CEO will — has said this publicly — if your competitors had gone down, they would have taken down a whole bunch of the suppliers you depend on. The brand of American autos would have diminished. That would have had severe consequences for Ford. And that’s the challenge we faced when I took office: an industry that was on the brink. That’s pretty gutsy. What happens to a typical business when its competitors go under? In the long run, does it usually suffer, or thrive?
NCTexan
That's basic "Street Organizer" finance and math! Here's how he chalks this one out... 2 + 3 = 17 17 - 5 = 23 "What the hell does it matter, it's the intentions that count!"
Argyle58
"I saved your business by subsidizing your competition.....". What a unique way of looking at things. Not exactly the way I learned it.

Double thunked Winston Smith, [ protagonist from Orwell's 1984 ]---- " 2 + 2 = 5" Obama: "All failures belong to someone else.....likewise, I'm responsible for any successes." AceRimmer
This is so twisted that the speechwriter who came up with this implausible idea should be taken out and shot on general principle. It's definitely raw meat and campaign fodder for the GOP in 2012.

Casino67
"I saved Ford by staying out of their way." No one had the guts to put that in the speech. Or "I took over GM so everyone would buy Ford". Or "I took over GM to show my good friend Hugo that I was watching what he is doing for his people".
