(CNSNews.com) – Michelle Obama’s e-mail campaign to “Wish Barack a Happy Birthday,” a fundraiser sent out by the Democratic National Committee, has purportedly generated over 1.2 million signatures, according to a new e-mail from BarackObama.com.

But organizers want more and have sent out a fundraising “chain letter” asking recipients to forward Michelle Obama’s message “to five friends.”

As CNSNews.com reported, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) sent out an e-mail last week from the first lady asking people to sign an online birthday greeting for the president. But clicking on the link takes those who sign the card to a Democratic Party “donation” page that directly solicits contributions.

The latest e-mail, sent in the name of Organizing for America founder David Plouffe, states the following:

“Today's the President's 49th birthday, and I just heard how many of you have signed his birthday card so far: 1,266,611 as of this morning.

“It's already an amazing show of support. But before the card is delivered -- with all of your signatures -- I want to make sure as many folks as possible get the chance to sign it.

“Will you forward the First Lady's e-mail below to five friends and ask them to sign with you?”

The e-mail provides a link to the official “Sign the card” Web page, which asks for a name and an e-mail address. Clicking the “Send the card” button takes the viewer directly to a page soliciting money.
