Fox News:

government official says it's the first major threat to Grand Isle, Louisiana in three weeks. A massive oil slick, described as "a tremendous plume" by the official, on a direct course to hit the Gulf Coast in 24-48 hours.

The slick, photographed by a Fox Cameraman aboard a chartered helicopter, is 20 miles out in the Gulf but headed towards land. It's said to be 32 miles long and several miles wide, with "fingers" of thick crude stretching in different directions both at sea level and below.

The slick may be broken up by chemical dispersants dropped from planes, but the layers of defenses established by BP and government officials, including containment boom, barges and skimmer ships may not be enough to keep the oil from reaching land.

It's expected to make impact by Monday night or Tuesday morning.

I'm sure Obama will get right on it as soon as he's finished with his golf game.

Bring in A Whale. As of 745 Monday, the A Whale is SE off Miami right now, 13.8 knots, heading to the Gulf.

Taiwan vessel poised to aid oil recovery

But red tape may delay the giant skimmer from starting work because it's not a U.S. ship.

Scott Harper

NORFOLK -- Ten stories tall and nearly four football fields long, the world's largest oil skimmer dropped anchor here Friday on its way to the Gulf of Mexico and a likely encounter with the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.

snipAs designed, the giant skimmer would roll across the Gulf "like a lawn mower cutting the grass," Su said, ingesting millions of gallons of oily water through the narrow slits.

The tainted water would then fall into huge storage tanks in the belly of the ship. There, oil would separate from sea water naturally. The toxic stuff would be collected and later disposed of, the water returned to the Gulf.

"A large-scale disaster needs a large-scale solution," Su told a crowd of reporters, shipping executives and regulators at the dock.

A Whale could handle 500,000 barrels of oily water per day, or slightly less than what all the skimmers now in the Gulf have gathered in more than 60 days on the job, Su said.

snipit needs an exemption from the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, commonly known as the Jones Act, a federal law requiring commercial ships doing business in U.S. coastal waters to be American-flagged.

Then there are environmental concerns. Because the ship would discharge water back into the Gulf, albeit after much of the oil had been skimmed away, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency must go along with the deal.

And most importantly, the Whale was not built and run by union workers. This really doesn't fit the administrations model for the new world order... nor does it fill the coffers of the DNC.

The A Whale's whereabouts is now south east of Key West.

A8UA7 is the call sign using AIS.

Click on the grid for Gulf of Mexico, move around until you get near Key West. Refresh if needed.

Look for a red ship moving wWSW below Big Pine Key around 5:00 pm est SE of Key West.

You can hover over the icon and see more detail.

shoutPepper! Cool info.

This is a Liberian flagged ship.

Liberia was founded in part by repatriated American slaves & had much support from the US at it's start. The capital, Monrovia, is named after our president, James Monroe, who took a special interest in the new nation. Their system of government is patterned after ours [roughly] & their President is a woman, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

I think Bobby J, should accept their offer & put them on clean-up, and then force the Feds [Coast Guard/Navy] to make a public display of stopping the work. Surely we can get the National Enquirer [the new "Paper of Record"] to cover this event.

We could call it the Gulf Peace Flotilla, on it's way to break the Obama Clean-up Blockade & it might get national coverage!
