Republican lawmakers are recoiling from former President Donald Trump's repeated attacks against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), believing it is signaling the beginning of a vicious primary that will weaken the GOP's top candidates heading into the 2024 election.

Trump is already building an extensive opposition file against the Florida governor, whom he views as his biggest threat, ahead of the general election, focusing his attacks on his previous voting record and policy stances. Now, his team has taken the barrage a step further by filing an ethics complaint against DeSantis, accusing him of running a "shadow presidential campaign" in violation of state election laws.

The lawsuit was filed to Florida Commission on Ethics Chairman Glenton Gilzean Jr. by MAGA Inc., a super PAC aligned with Trump. The PAC argues that DeSantis is meeting with "influential figures" and vetting campaign operatives in early primary states, as well as participating in illegal fundraising. In Florida, officials are barred from running for national office unless they resign from their state positions.

The early onset of mudslinging has GOP lawmakers worried about what a battle with Trump could mean for the party's image and success in 2024, as Republicans hope to appeal to more independent and less far-right voters.

“I winced in 2016, and I’m wincing now,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) told the Hill when asked about Trump’s tactics. “That’s just because that’s not my style. I don’t think you’ll ever take the New York style out of Donald Trump. It’s too much to ask. He’s a fully baked cake."

Trump Team Throws Blistering Insults at DeSantis: 'Misery and Despair'

Former President Donald Trump’s repeated attacks on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla) are not slowing down soon, claiming that the governor has ruined Florida.

According to Trump’s campaign team, the sunshine state is among the worst states to raise a family, work, and retire, despite thousands of Americans migrating to Florida in recent years. :snip:

For example, the email points out that the state’s cost-to-living has jumped over ten percent in the last year, adding that home prices have exponentially increased in areas such as Miami and Tampa. However, that could be because the state has become too popular, with more and more people moving to DeSantis’s turf.

Trump’s insane lies on DeSantis trash successful conservative policies

Presidential primaries get very dirty, and that’s to be expected.

But here in April 2023, the GOP one has already descended into a disgusting spiral of lies and insanity — because of the increasingly disordered and amateurish Donald Trump campaign.

Trump has a clear lane in the primary.

He has a record of accomplishment as president; he led the country to prosperity that has since sharply declined; he exposes the politicization and corruption of our government agencies when he’s personally targeted by leftist activist district attorneys like Alvin Bragg and when he is the subject of a baseless search for documents at his home.

He remains absolutely beloved by a segment of the Republican base.

Boom, boom, boom.

Yet he, and the not-very-smart people around him, have decided that for him to win the primary he needs to not only destroy Florida’s extremely popular Gov. Ron DeSantis (who has not yet even announced a presidential run), but also to demolish all of DeSantis’ conservative policies and practices that have been so wildly successful in the sunshine state.:snip:

@Valin The price of real estate is one of the big factors - but another huge factor is home insurance. It's crazy. More than real estate taxes. That is because of the hurricanes and flood over the last couple of years. Many insurers have left. I have read that the legislature is working to bring in additional carriers with some sort of subsidies.
