New Capitol Riot footage shows that police escorted Jacob Chansley to the Senate floor. AP

Newly revealed surveillance footage from Jan. 6, 2021, shows two Capitol police officers escorting Jacob Chansley, the be-horned so-called “QAnon Shaman” who has come to symbolize the riot, through the halls of the Capitol and to the very door of the US Senate.

The footage aired on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show Monday night shows the officers closely following Chansley as he wanders the corridors of the Capitol, bare-chested and wearing face paint and a luxuriant fur hat with Viking horns.

“Virtually every moment of his time inside the Capitol was caught on tape,” says Carlson, who was granted exclusive access by Speaker Kevin McCarthy to 40,000 hours of surveillance footage from that day inside and around the Capitol, which has never been seen before by the public.

“The tapes show the Capitol police never stopped Jacob Chansley. They helped him. They acted as his tour guides.”

Tucker Carlson, with help from Kevin McCarthy, tries to sanitize the very real violence of the January 6 attack

New York CNN  —

The face of Fox News is doing everything in his power to sanitize the horrific violence the nation saw unfold in real-time at the U.S. Capitol in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

And on Monday night, he had a major assist from Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who granted him exclusive access to tens of thousands of hours of January 6 security camera footage.

After continuing to sow doubt about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election (“it is clear the 2020 election was a grave betrayal of American democracy”), Tucker Carlson used the footage on Monday night to portray those who broke into the U.S. Capitol as mostly peaceful patriots who simply felt wronged by the system. Carlson, who falsely claimed the footage provided “conclusive” evidence proving Democrats “lied” about the events of January 6, aired footage showing some people taking selfies and meandering through the U.S. Capitol.

(Snip)

Perhaps, McCarthy believes that playing ball with the Fox News extremist will curry favor with him and put an end to the brutal attacks Carlson has leveled at McCarthy over the last few years. And it appears to have worked for the moment, with Carlson on Monday night offering some praise for McCarthy.

But the result of the House speaker’s actions will undoubtedly be a muddying of the waters on a key and defining moment in American history, reigniting the far-right’s information war on the truth in hopes of cleansing its actions in the lead up to January 6.

Tucker Carlson pushes the bogus Jan. 6 story he wanted to tell
As Tucker Carlson presents the results of exclusive access to Jan. 6 footage, it’s important to remember that the deception is the point.

The fix was in. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave Fox News’ Tucker Carlson exclusive access to sensitive Jan. 6 security camera footage, and there was no great mystery as to what would happen next: The controversial host, with Republican leaders’ blessing, would cherry-pick footage that bolsters a predetermined political narrative.

(Snip)

Naturally, the Fox host chose not to present the evidence that was at odds with the story he set out to tell. The result was a show that, as NBC News put it, “falsely depicted” an insurrectionist riot as a peaceful gathering. HuffPost published a related report, noting that Carlson exploited his special access to “falsely claim” that there was effectively no riot on Jan. 6.

But just as notable as Carlson’s campaign is the degree to which we saw this coming. A television personality spent two years peddling absurd theories about the attack on the Capitol. Then an allied House speaker provided the host with special access to sensitive footage. The television personality then told his audience that his theories were right all along and his preconceived ideas have been confirmed by the information that only he’s seen.

What an amazing coincidence.

McCarthy hit with ethics complaint after handing over Jan. 6 tapes to Tucker Carlson
Cami Mondeaux, Breaking News Reporter
March 07, 2023 10:18 AM

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is facing an ethics complaint filed by a nonprofit watchdog group that accuses the GOP leader of being politically motivated in his release of security camera footage of the Jan. 6 riot to Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Members of Public Citizen filed a complaint against McCarthy on Tuesday, requesting that the Office of Congressional Ethics investigate the speaker over whether he violated House rules. The request comes one day after Carlson began releasing portions of the footage on his prime-time show, prompting concerns among other news outlets he would “advocate an inaccurate story of events.”

GOP LEADERS SAY JAN. 6 FOOTAGE WILL BE VETTED BEFORE RELEASE AFTER GIVING TUCKER CARLSON ‘UNFETTERED ACCESS’

“The Speaker’s release of security footage exclusively to Tucker Carlson is pure and simple using congressional resources for partisan gamesmanship — the very type of polarizing gamesmanship that has caused such damage to the public’s perception of the integrity of Congress,” the group wrote in its letter.

(Snip)

The House speaker has vowed to make the footage available to other news outlets once Carlson’s crew is finished sifting through it, but it’s unclear how long that may take. Public Citizen denounced McCarthy over the decision to provide the footage exclusively to Carlson, accusing the speaker of violating the First Amendment.

“It was wrong for Speaker McCarthy to provide this footage to one organization that happens to be politically aligned with him and not release the videos to the media generally at the same time,” the letter states. “This is not like granting an exclusive interview; this is providing a valuable government resource exclusively to one news outlet and discriminating against others, which flies in the face of First Amendment values.”

Mar 8, 2023 UNITED STATES

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy released, in an exclusive to FoxNews pundit Tucker Carlson, thousands of hours of security camera footage from in and around the Capitol on January 6, 2021. It shows a much calmer scene than previously released clips, with protestors appearing to walk about taking pictures like tourists, undisturbed by police.

The so-called QAnon Shaman, Jacob Chansley, appears to be escorted around the building and assisted into the Senate Chamber by officers, where he prayed, thanking God for their assistance.

The Capitol Police chief has since said that Carlson's selective editing and claims about the video are "outrageous and false", and that outnumbered officers were attempting deescalation techniques to get protestors, including Chansley, to peacefully leave the building. Chansely, in a signed confession, has said police repeatedly asked him to leave.

Do we now know what really happened during the "insurrection"? Will we ever? How can conservatives reasonably evaluate competing claims about the events, and the video, of January 6?

I don't have inside info but Tucker's program lookeds as if they dropped the Jan. 6 videos they'd planned and promised, moved up the "reaction" segments they were going to do later in the program, and then dropped the topic of Jan. 6 entirely.

What do you think?

Well, it may not be up to Tucker. He was getting it from both sides yesterday, but more importantly Rupert Murdoch was. Seeing that he has a couple of lawsuits

going - he might be getting strong armed. Not that Murdoch doesn't have to bucks to lose , but not everyone takes the chances that Musk did.

TUCKER CARLSON: We knew there was a reason leaders hid the January 6 tapes

One of the hallmarks of people who are telling the truth, in case you were wondering how to tell the difference, is that people who are telling the truth are calm. You don't wave their hands around and make wild accusations. They don't need to do that. It's enough to say what they know and if honest people turn out to be wrong about something they have claimed, they'll admit it. They don't double down on false. They made a mistake and that's okay. It's not like they're claiming to be God.

Liars behave differently. Liars are touchy, sometimes to the point of hysteria. They're hiding something. That's the whole point of lying and they're worried you're going to find out what it is. Liars are fragile because over time, lying makes you weak and afraid and has the same effect on countries by the way.

We're living through one of those clarifying moments. Actually, we're thankful for it, where we're learning exactly who the liars are. On Monday, we showed you unreleased videotape from January 6. It proved, that tape proved, that three of the most important claims our leaders have made about that day were untrue. Their claims were lies. We were not shocked to discover that. We knew there was a reason that congressional leaders had been hiding the tape and that reporters in Washington weren't demanding to see it. They were lying to us obviously. That's why you hide things.

But what was actually surprising, what we can't quite get over even now, is how they responded when they were caught lying. They didn't seem embarrassed. They didn't apologize. They weren't even curious to learn more about what actually happened on January 6. Let's see the tape. No, they don't want to see it. They exploded in rage. And then as liars tend to do, they doubled down.

They told the same lies they'd been caught telling, but with even greater aggression this time. Shut up. It's midnight, they said, as the sun rose behind them. Who acts like that? Well, sociopaths do and in this case, the sociopaths turned out to be both Democrats and Republicans. The commitment to lying in Washington is far deeper and more bipartisan even than we realize, and we follow this stuff for a living.

Now, you sometimes hear people say that the whole partisan system is an illusion and that underneath the manufactured debates, the leaders on both sides are, in fact, secretly united in a common love of money and power and the deception required to get them. And honestly, we can never really bring ourselves to believe that. It's just too dark. But now we do believe it because we have seen it. :snip:

An egregious denial of due process for Jan. 6 protesters

For more than two years, while they controlled every lever of power in Washington, the Democratic Party and their media allies told a one-sided story about what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

For more than two years, the surveillance footage from the 2021 Capitol riot, aired this week by Tucker Carlson, was kept from the American public by a Democratic Congress so a false narrative became cemented in the public consciousness.

For more than two years, footage that could have exonerated Jan. 6 defendants was kept from their legal teams.

People are in prison because of that cover-up.:snip:

At Best, The Swamp Thinks You Are Really Dumb
Tim Meads
Mar 8, 2023

The Swamp’s reaction to Fox News’s Tucker Carlson airing of less than two hours total of January 6 video footage proves that at best, the powers that be think you are really dumb and cannot handle doing your own research while weighing competing narratives and drawing your own conclusions about world events.

And that is at best.

At worst, and perhaps far more likely, the entire legacy media and leaders from both political parties are criticizing Carlson because his footage has changed the historic record and disrupted their narrative.

Yet, for the purposes of this column, let us give folks like President Joe Biden and Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) the benefit of the doubt; Let us pretend that they really do care only about protecting democracy and the unvarnished truth. Let us also say that they did not use January 6 to tarnish former President Donald J. Trump and more than 74 million voters with all their might.

Even if that were true, their reaction would still be insulting and belittling to the American people.

House GOP organizing trip to see jailed Jan. 6 defendants, led by Marjorie Taylor Greene
Emily Brooks and Mychael Schnell

03/08/23

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is working with House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) to schedule a trip for members of Congress to visit the Washington, D.C., jail where Jan. 6 defendants are being held.

Greene, who has previously toured the jail where those charged with crimes relating to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack are held, is leading the effort.

A letter to start the process of scheduling the visit is expected to be released on Thursday, both Greene and Comer said. Greene added the letter will probably be addressed to “multiple people” so the group can “let them know that we’re coming.”

Comer said that he is working with Greene on the letter just as he would with any other member of his committee on matters they are interested in.

Mar 9, 2023  UNITED STATES
Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former foreign correspondent for The New York Times, finds the January 6 protestors deplorable, but says the treatment of those arrested or detained in the wake of the incident is un-American. What does it mean when a "die-hard Lefty" finds common cause with those on the right outraged about the Special Administrative Measures invoked against some of the accused?

Lynching the Deplorables
The criminal investigation undertaken by the federal government against hundreds of participants in the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol is polarizing the country and shredding civil liberties.
Chris Hedges

Mar. 5 2023

There is little that unites me with those who occupied the Capitol building on Jan. 6. Their vision for America, Christian nationalism, white supremacy, blind support for Trump and embrace of reactionary fact-free conspiracy theories leaves a very wide chasm between their beliefs and mine. But that does not mean I support the judicial lynching against many of those who participated in the Jan. 6 events, a lynching that is mandating years in pretrial detention and prison for misdemeanors. Once rights become privileges, none of us are safe.

(Snip)

At least 1,003 people have been arrested and charged so far for participation in events on Jan. 6, with 476 pleading guilty, in what has been the largest single criminal investigation in U.S. history, according to analysis by Business Insider. The charges and sentences vary, with many receiving misdemeanor sentences such as fines, probation, a few months in prison or a combination of the three. Of the 394 federal defendants who have had their cases adjudicated and sentenced as of Feb. 6, approximately 220 “have been sentenced to periods of incarceration” with a further 100 defendants “sentenced to a period of home detention, including approximately 15 who also were sentenced to a period of incarceration,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. There are six convictions and four guilty pleas on charges of “seditious conspiracy.” This offense is so widely defined that it includes conspiring to levy war against the government on the one hand and delaying the execution of any law on the other. Those charged and convicted of “seditious conspiracy” were accused of collaborating to oppose “the lawful transfer of presidential power by force” by preventing or delaying the Certification of the Electoral College vote. While a few of the organizers of the Jan. 6 protest such as Stewart Rhodes, who founded Oath Keepers, may conceivably be guilty of sedition, and even this is in doubt, the vast majority of those caught up in the incursion of the Capitol did not commit serious crimes, engage in violence or know what they would do in Washington other than protest the election results.

Joseph D. McBride went to law school because his brother was serving a 15-year sentence for a crime he did not commit. He provided free legal advice as a law school student to those encamped in Zuccotti Park in New York City during the Occupy movement. Following law school, he worked as a public defender and in the Legal Aid Society. He represents several of those charged in the Jan. 6 incursion, including Richard Barnett. Barnett was photographed in Nancy Pelosi’s office with his leg propped up on her desk. Barnett was convicted by a federal jury, which deliberated for two hours, on eight counts, including disorderly conduct in the Capitol building. He faces up to 47 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 3.

(Snip)

“The D.C. jury pool is poisoned beyond repair,” McBride said. “When you just look at what the January 6  Committee did alone, never mind President Biden’s speeches about ‘insurrectionists,’ ‘MAGA Republican extremists’ and all this stuff, and if you just consider the fact that D.C. is very small, that people who work in the Federal Government are all by definition, kind of victims of January 6 and what happened that day, their institutions and colleagues were ‘under attack.’ How can anybody from that town serve on a jury pool? They can’t. The bias is astounding.”

(Snip)

The cheerleading, or at best indifference, by Democratic Party supporters and much of the left to these show trials will come back to haunt them. We are exacerbating the growing tribalism and political antagonisms that will increasingly express themselves through violence. We are complicit, once again, of using the courts to carry out vendettas. We are corroding democratic institutions. We are hardening the ideology and rage of the far-right. We are turning those being hounded to prison into political prisoners and martyrs. We are moving ever closer towards tyranny.

So you think it is fair of Hedges to make the claim that those present were Christian nationalists who believed in white supremacy, and who gave their blind support to Trump and embraced reactionary fact-free conspiracy theories, then lets you know he's not one of them. What he claims is no more then an assumption and a very prejudicial one at that. So, he sees them as those half basket of deplorables Clinton referenced, the perpetrator of wars that killed hundreds of thousands if not millions of Muslims and then she calls Trump a xenophobe. It's this view of his base, always seen as less then, or as a bunch of deplorables that has led to those harsh sentences Hedges is writing about. Maybe many were there because they voted for Trump, and gave their support to a man elected into office who for four years was seen as an illegitimate president based on the lie of Russia-gate, which was supported by the democrats, the elites in the mainstream media as well as those on the left. Their lies helped delegitimize journalism even further.
