WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said in a lengthy statement Monday that the FBI was conducting a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate and asserted that agents had broken open a safe. A person familiar with the matter said the action was related to a probe of whether Trump had taken classified records from his White House tenure to his Florida residence.

The action, which the FBI and Justice Department did not immediately confirm, marks a dramatic escalation in law enforcement scrutiny of Trump and comes as he has been laying the groundwork to make another bid for president. Though a search warrant does not suggest that criminal charges are near or even expected, federal officials looking to obtain one must demonstrate that they have probable cause that a crime occurred.

“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” Trump said in his statement.

GOP slams 'weaponization' of DOJ after Trump's Mar-a-Lago raided by FBI; Dems call it 'accountability'[/b]

FBI raid is related to materials Trump allegedly brought to his Florida residence after his presidency

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem blasted Biden's FBI, calling the agency's actions "un-American" in a statement posted to Twitter Monday evening.

"The FBI raid on President Trump’s home is an unprecedented political weaponization of the Justice Department. They’ve been after President Trump as a candidate, as President, and now as a former President. Using the criminal justice system in this manner is un-American," wrote Noem.

But "Squad" Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said the FBI is working toward "accountability" and went as far as to say Trump should be in prison.

"That’s what happens when you break the law, try to steal an election, and incite a deadly insurrection. Donald Trump should be in jail. I’m glad to see the FBI taking steps towards accountability."

How Florida politicians are reacting to FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago

Michael Van Sickler, Tampa Bay Times

(Snip)

While Gov. Ron DeSantis didn’t immediately comment on the sudden news Monday, his spokesperson, Christina Pushaw, did — by evoking a Sinclair Lewis dystopian novel about the the rise of an American dictator.

“Anyone who knows about my background before I came to Florida,” Pushaw tweeted, “will understand why the politicization of the FBI/DOJ, or even the appearance of it, scares me more than anything else. We Americans like to tell ourselves ‘it couldn’t happen here,’ ... until it happens.”

U.S. Sen Marco Rubio struck a similar tone in a later tweet.

“Using government power to persecute political opponents is something we have seen many times from 3rd world Marxist dictatorships. But never before in America.”

FBI Search of Trump’s Home Means DOJ Believes Evidence of ‘Crime or Crimes’ Was at Mar-a-Lago, Former Federal Prosecutor Says

Adam Klasfeld

Aug 8th, 2022, 7:21 pm

Former federal prosecutor Mitchell Epner, who is now a partner at Rottenberg Lipman Rich PC, emphasized that the development marks a first in American history — and signals several things.

“Number one, people at the highest level of the Department of Justice authorized prosecutors to seek a search warrant for the former president,” Epner noted. “This is not something that would be done by a line assistant, or something that would be done by the U.S. Attorney for a district. This would require approval either from the Deputy Attorney General, the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division or the Attorney General himself.”

If the FBI executed a search warrant, it must be supported by probable cause of evidence that satisfied a federal judge, Epner continued.

Though the basis of the search is currently unknown, a federal judge previously found, in a civil case involving Trump’s lawyer John Eastman, that both Trump and his attorney “more likely than not” committed two crimes: obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

CBS News reports that the search relates to missing White House documents.

In February, the National Archives reportedly asked the Justice Department to investigate Trump’s delays in returning 15 boxes of materials from his Mar-a-Lago residence to the government — only under the threat of legal action.

According to the Washington Post, some of the notable documents that the National Archives recovered included what Trump described as “love letters” with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Trump also reportedly retained a letter that his predecessor Barack Obama left for him.

Marc Elias boasts about the real motive behind the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago raid

Marc Elias is a very smart man who hooked his wagon to the Hillary Clinton star and has been involved in almost all the attacks against Trump. His allegiances are clear, and he’s incredibly excited about the Justice Department’s decision to sic the FBI on Trump, a former and possibly future president: The main purpose is to keep Trump from being able to run again. That’s it.

Since the day Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in November 2016, the Clinton camp, the Democrat establishment, the administrative agencies (aka the Deep State), the NeverTrumpers, and the media—collectively, the “anti-Trump coalition”—have had a single unified purpose: Get Trump out of office and keep him out of office. They’ve had some success, but they haven’t sealed the deal.

The Russia Hoax occupied much of Trump’s energy during his first two years in office, leaving him unable to turn all his efforts to carrying out his campaign promise. However, the hoax eventually fell apart but only after revealing, thanks to practically daily political colonoscopies, that Trump is probably the most honest man in both business and politics.:snip:

Turley on Trump Raid: ‘Why Didn’t Merrick Garland Ask for a Special Counsel to Be Appointed?’

Monday, during an appearance on FNC’s “Jesse Watters Primetime” following news that the FBI had raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, FL for undisclosed reasons, George Washington University Law School professor and constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley questioned why Attorney General Merrick Garland would not have proceeded with a special counsel before green-lighting the raid.

According to Turley, the potential appearance of politicization would have warranted an impartial investigation, which could have been done with a special counsel.:snip:

Gingrich: If They Can Do This to a Former President, 'What Can They Do to You?

CNSNews.com) - It doesn't matter whether you're a Democrat, a Republican, a liberal, or a conservative: "If 30 FBI agents can take over the house of a former president of the United States and probable candidate for president, what can they do to you?" former House Speaker Newt Gingrich asked on Monday night.

"And when you look at the Democrats who are trying to add 85,000 IRS agents [he meant 87,000] to the already existing 77,000, that would mean 162,000 IRS agents compared, for example, to 29,000 people that we have on the border trying to control the border," Gingrich said.:snip:

DeSantis Blasts Biden’s ‘Banana Republic’ After Feds Raid Trump’s Mar-A-Lago

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blasted the FBI’s raid Monday night on former President Donald Trump‘s home at Mar-a-Lago, saying the Biden administration has turned the nation into a ‘Banana Republic.’

The investigation is centered around classified material that Trump brought with him to Mar-a-Lago from the White House. But the shocking specter of federal agents swarming a former president’s private home left many conservatives, including DeSantis, stunned.

“The raid of [Mar-a-Lago] is another escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies against the Regime’s political opponents, while people like Hunter Biden get treated with kid gloves,” DeSantis wrote on Twitter. “Now the Regime is getting another 87k IRS agents to wield against its adversaries? Banana Republic.”:snip:
