It isn’t just the U.S.: around the world “green” fanatics are destroying livelihoods and dragging down standards of living. This instance comes from the Netherlands: “Dutch farmers protest livestock cuts to curb nitrogen.”

Quote

In one of their largest-ever demonstrations, the farmers demanded the scrapping of recently announced plans by the Hague-based government, which could see a 30 percent reduction in livestock.

The Netherlands, the world’s second-largest agricultural exporter…

I was surprised to learn this, but it is true.

Of course there is a choice, but greenies don’t like to do cost/benefit calculations.

The Dutch government plans to cut greenhouse gas nitrogen by as much as 70 percent in 131 key areas — many of them close to nature reserves — to reach climate goals by 2030.

For farmers this means a 40-percent drop in emissions is expected, which would require around 30 percent less cattle, according to reports.

So for zero measurable benefit, people get less (i.e., more expensive) meat and fewer dairy products.

The protest has included driving tractors slowly down highways:

Jul 3, 2022 Massive protests are occurring in the Netherlands as Dutch farmers are protesting against the government's rules that would limit carbon and nitrogen emissions out of their farms, says Sky News host James Morrow.

Farmers protested around the Netherlands over the government's new policy which would see the country slash nitrogen oxide and ammonia emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

"Massive massive protests, they're blocking highways, they're blocking traffic – I've seen them even spraying manure on government offices," Mr Morrow said.

Over 10,000 farmers defied the wishes of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and protested the liquidation of 3,000 farms. Canadians joined the protest as well, knowing that Rutte's radical climate policy is coming to North America through his friend Justin Trudeau.

Netherlands: 10,000 Farmers Protest Against Climate Change Regulations

More than ten thousand Dutch farmers protested in the city of the Hague on Saturday, in response to the new European Union-backed climate change laws.

The Hague police allowed the farmers’ rally, but blocked their tractors from entering the city. “Thousands of farmers and anti-establishment demonstrators protested Saturday in a park in The Hague against Dutch government plans to reduce nitrate emissions,” the Associated Press reported Saturday. “Police said they stopped an unknown number of tractors that were headed for the farmers’ demonstration.”

The Dutch government has committed itself to meeting the EU targets on lowering greenhouse gas emissions, even if it means putting the country’s farmers out of business.

The farmers’ fear for their livelihood is not based on baseless conspiracy theories, but on the threats issued by the country’s government. The Dutch government wants to “convince farmers to reduce livestock herds or leave the industry to cut emissions,” The UK newspaper Financial Times reported recently.

Climate activists also held a counter-demonstration in the city, demanding an end to  fossil fuel and the creation of more radical climate laws. “Elsewhere in the city, thousands of environmentalists blocked a major thoroughfare in an unauthorised protest against tax rules they say encourage the use of fossil fuels,” Reuters reported.

Dutch Farmers Strike Back

John Hinderaker

March 17, 2023

We have written (here and here) about the Dutch government’s war on its own people. In service to the mythical god of global warming, the Netherlands is driving its farmers out of business. Which is not only bad for the farmers, it is bad for the Dutch economy, since that country is the number two exporter of food products in the world. Not to mention that it is bad for those Dutch citizens who like to eat.

But the forces of good are striking back. The London Times headlines: “Anti-green BBB farmers’ party stuns Dutch politics.”

Quote

A populist party set up by farmers has made huge gains in Dutch elections, in a sign of public dissatisfaction with the socially liberal ruling coalition.

The BoerBurgerBeweging (Farmer-Citizen Movement), also known as the BBB, won almost 20 per cent of the vote, giving it 15 seats in the Senate, the upper house of parliament.

I don’t understand the Netherlands’ system, but I take it this was some kind of regional election.

Quote

The BBB opposes government plans to cut harmful emissions by reducing livestock numbers and buying out farms.

The leader of the party attributed her victory to turnout by normal people:
