Many attended a community meeting Tuesday night at the Van Cleve Recreation Center but were disappointed with the outcome. June 23 2022 Crime is out of control at the University of Minnesota and parents are tired of the finger-pointing. They turned out in force for a community meeting Tuesday night at the Van Cleve Recreation Center but were disappointed with the outcome. (Snip) The meeting was attended by Tina Erazmus, the university’s director of government and community relations, and Nick Juarez, a member of the campus police department’s community engagement team. President Joan Gabel did not attend, nor did anyone from the Minneapolis Police Department. “I didn’t hear a whole lot of questions answered. I heard a whole lot of talking and a whole lot of just trying to kill time. I didn’t hear a whole lot of the parents’ questions answered, unfortunately,” parent Mike Olson told Alpha News. “[It was a lot of] pointing of fingers … we’re supposed to talk to the mayor, we’re supposed to talk to the university president, we’re supposed to talk to the council woman, but yet nobody wants to do anything about it, it sounds like. U of M president leaves public safety meeting after 10 minutes Nearly 200 parents met with campus and Minneapolis leaders to discuss the rise in violent crime Monday night. Pafoua Yang July 13, 2022 University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel Zoomed into an in-person public safety forum Monday night and left after just 10 minutes, angering some parents who fear for their children’s safety. The university has seen a 45 percent increase in violent crime since 2019. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman, and University of Minnesota Police Chief Matt Clark listened to parents’ concerns for more than an hour. “What the issue is was exemplified really well in the president of the university making a million dollars a year [but] was able to attend 10 minutes of this meeting,” said Harry Kennedy, a concerned parent.
