Chicago rocked by widespread looting caught on video after police-involved shooting

Widespread looting across Chicago’s Magnificent Mile shopping district early Monday was seen in videos circulating online, showing clashes with police after an officer-involved shooting that left a young suspect wounded.

 

Social media users posted videos of hundreds of people looting stores such as Nordstrom, Walgreens, Macy's, Coach, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Some exchanged gunfire with police at one point, the Chicago Tribune reported.

“Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago with more overnight looting and vandalism in the Loop,” tweeted Ryan Baker, an anchor for WBBM-TV. “Appears to be coordinated effort with minimal police presence.”

The Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to an email from Fox News.

The unrest began Sunday afternoon after police responded to a report of a man with a gun in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. While pursuing that individual on foot, he “turned and fired shots” at officers before being struck himself and taken to a local hospital, Deputy Chief Delonda Tally told Fox 32 Chicago. A crowd that had gathered at the scene then faced off against police and started hurling objects at officers after getting agitated over a false rumor that the suspect – who is in his late teens or early 20s -- was a child, investigators add.

Looters, vandals sweep through Chicago’s Magnificent Mile after police shooting

Hours after Chicago police shot a young man who turned and fired at them, hundreds of people went on a looting and vandalism spree in various parts of the Windy City early Monday, according to reports.

The mayhem began about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, when cops responded to reports of a man with a gun in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side and located a person who fit the description near Moran Park, the Chicago Tribune reported.

While running away from police, the suspect turned around and fired at them. The officers returned fire, wounding the gunman, who was transported to University of Chicago Hospital in unknown condition, according to the newspaper.

Police and witnesses later said a crowd of about 30 people faced off against cops near 56th and Aberdeen streets.

Authorities said someone spread false information to the group that police had shot and wounded a child.

Hundreds of people swept through the Magnificent Mile and other parts of downtown Chicago early Monday, smashing windows, looting stores, confronting police and at one point exchanging gunfire with officers, authorities said.

More than 100 people were arrested as of 9 a.m., according to Chicago police Superintendent David Brown. Thirteen officers were injured during the unrest, including a sergeant who was hit by a bottle. A civilian and private security guard were shot and wounded.

“What occurred in our downtown and surrounding communities was abject criminal behavior, pure and simple,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. “And there cannot be any excuse for it. Period.”

It took police officers roughly four hours to get the downtown back under control, leading to finger pointing across the political spectrum and calls for the Illinois National Guard to once again help quell unrest in the country’s third-largest city.

American Cities In Catastrophic Decline

Rioting continues nightly in Portland. Criminals are arrested, immediately released, and return to the streets. It is hard to see how Portland has a viable future. Likewise with Seattle. A city that cannot maintain order will soon be vacated by normal people who are able to leave, leaving only criminals and those without the means to get away. Minneapolis, with its days of rioting followed by skyrocketing crime and parks turned into tent encampments, is not far behind. Panic is spreading among people who own houses and (worse) condominiums there.

Then there is Chicago, where mass looting took place last night. Thieves struck on Michigan Avenue, the premier shopping venue between the coasts. Andy Ngo, the prime chronicler of contemporary urban catastrophe, has the story in a series of tweets.

One notable feature of these videos is the absence of law enforcement. Police are hopelessly outnumbered, and looters, rioters and arsonists arrogantly assume that they can steal and burn to their hearts’ content with no interference.

Unfortunately, they are right. Few are arrested, those that are arrested are immediately set free, and the likelihood of criminal prosecution is negligible, especially in cities that have Soros-installed prosecutors who have pledged not to prosecute.

None of this is remotely viable, obviously. Through history, the normal practice has been to shoot looters. Rightly or wrongly, we are no longer willing to do that. The result, evidently, is that order cannot be maintained. Black Lives Matter sponsors riots and loot-fests, like the one last night in Chicago, with the apparently enthusiastic backing of big business and with not a word of criticism from any Democratic Party politician. What does Joe Biden think of Black Lives Matter-sponsored rioting, arson and looting? Maybe someday someone will ask him.

At some point, a society becomes too stupid to survive. I am not sure we have arrived at that point yet, but we may be getting close.
