Afghanistan 'insider attack' leaves 2 US soldiers dead, 6 wounded

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and six were wounded Saturday when U.S. and Afghan troops were fired on during a mission in Nangarhar province  in eastern Afghanistan, U.S. officials told Fox News.

The casualties occurred during a so-called "insider attack" in which an Afghan dressed as an Afghan army fighter suddenly opened fire, U.S. military officials said, according to The Associated Press.

Such attacks have been frequent occurences in the nearly two decades U.S. troops have spent in the country. In 2012, for example, 25 percent of Americans military deaths in Afghanistan were caused by such attacks by allied Afghan forces, U.S. military officials have said.

On Saturday, military spokesman Col. Sonny Leggett issued in a statement saying those involved in the most recent attack were "engaged by direct firing.":snip:
