ritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson is on course for a stunning electoral victory, defying expectations and clearing the way for Britain to leave the European Union next month.

Early returns and an exit poll released shortly after voting ended on Thursday night put the Conservatives on track to win 368 seats in the 650-seat Parliament, a majority of 86 seats, which is far higher than most opinion polls had indicated. The Labour Party is expected to suffer its worst showing in more than 70 years, dropping 71 seats and finishing with 191.

The win marks a stunning turnaround for the Conservatives and a personal triumph for Mr. Johnson, who has confounded pundits since he took over as party leader in July from Theresa May. Only a few months ago, the Conservatives were languishing at 9 per cent in the opinion polls, and Ms. May seemed incapable of delivering Brexit. Mr. Johnson turned things around by uniting his fractious party and renegotiating a withdrawal agreement Ms. May had struck with the EU. When Parliament delayed ratification of the deal in October, he plunged the country into a snap election and gambled that voters would see his deal as the only way out of the Brexit impasse.

UK exit poll analysis: What a big win for Boris Johnson would mean

The national exit poll released moments ago from the United Kingdom shows Boris Johnson's Conservative Party is predicted to gain 50 seats, for a total of 368 members of parliament. That would be a huge win.

An effective majority in the new parliament (due to non-voting Sinn Fein members of parliament) is likely to be 322 seats. If the exit poll results are anywhere near accurate, Johnson is heading back into government with a commanding mandate in the House of Commons.

Brexit will likely happen by the end of January or shortly thereafter. But more than that, a majority of this size would give Johnson significant latitude to negotiate a long-term post-Brexit trading and political relationship with the European Union. In short, it would make the Conservative Party leader a very powerful prime minister.

For Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, if the exit polls are true, it would be a disaster.:snip:

General election results – live: Boris Johnson thanks switching Labour voters for landslide victory, as Corbyn under pressure to quit immediately

UK Conservati

Boris Johnson has hailed a political “earthquake” which saw traditional Labour voters “lend” the prime minister support at the election and hand him a decisive majority in parliament. The victorious Conservatives are expected to finish up on 364 seats.

Jeremy Corbyn blamed Brexit for Labour’s devastating defeat, as he announced he would stand down as leader after overseeing a “period of reflection”. The party is set to take just 203 seats – its worst election performance since 1935.

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to the SNP and quit as party leader. Nicola Sturgeon said she had a “strengthened” mandate for a second vote on Scottish independence, as the SNP made a series of gains.

What Just Happened In The United Kingdom. Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, Explains

There are very few Americans walking around who have been on good terms with Baroness Thatcher, visited her often in London, who have written about Sir Winston Churchill, served as assistant to Churchill’s official biographer Sr. Martin Gilbert and only one of them is married to an Englishwoman-turned-American, the remarkable Penny Arnn. Dr. Larry Arnn was my guest this morning on this week’s “Hillsdale Dialogue.” Listen to Dr. Arnn, to understand:
