Hong Kong Clashes Escalate as University is Besieged by Police Fresh clashes further escalated tensions in Hong Kong this week following the death of a student who allegedly fell while trying to escape tear gas, police shooting another protester at close range, and a protester setting a man on fire following a confrontation. These new clashes resulted in school closures, road blocks, a late-night meeting at the Chief Executive’s house, a skull fractured by a tear gas canister and the death of an elderly cleaner after being hit with a projectile. The siege at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, or CUHK, continues, leaving the school to consider seeking government assistance.

As the Hong Kong protests escalate and the anger against the government mounts, there is one public services department that's growing in popularity -- firefighters. While the police force is widely criticized for their handling of the protests, fire engines get a round of applause when they arrive at the scene of unrest. CNN's Will Ripley reports a small, but growing number of firefighters have admitted that they support the protest movement across the city.

Hong Kong protests: Tense stand-off at university campus

Nov. 17 2019

Police have besieged a university campus in Hong Kong occupied by protesters who have been fighting back with arrows and petrol bombs.

Officers have warned that they could use live ammunition if protesters do not stop attacking them using such weapons.

A media liaison officer was on Sunday wounded in the leg with an arrow near the Polytechnic University (PolyU).

Months of anti-government protests have caused turmoil in the city.

The latest violence is however some of the worst the semi-autonomous Chinese territory has seen since the movement began. The police have become targets for radical demonstrators, who accuse them of excessive force.

Police have so far been responding to violence around the PolyU campus mostly with tear gas and water cannon.
