UPDATED AND EXPANDED WITH MIKIE SCARS INTERVIEW, QUOTES FROM SOURCES
In a stunning development, the likes of which has not been seen since 1985, Francesco (Frank) Cali, the reputed acting boss of the Gambino crime family, was gunned down outside his home on Staten Island on Wednesday night, according to a senior police official and widespread media reports.

The police said they received a report about the grizzly shooting outside 25 Hilltop Terrace in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island around 9:20 p.m. There was also a report of a blue pickup truck leaving the scene around the time of shooting.

The Daily News quoted a witness as saying “There were like six shots, and then there were three more. The man (Cali) was on the ground face-up. His head was by his SUV, and the truck was open.”

As per a BBC report: Witnesses said Cali's killer also “ran him over before fleeing the scene. Family members were seen to rush into the street and sit crying next to his body.”

Some reports say he was run over by the blue vehicle before he was shot.

Who killed Cali? We asked sources.

"Wow," said one. "Who knows. Wouldn't it be insane if it was Gene (Gene Gotti, John's brother)? Maybe a renegade other crew like Albanians or something. In front of his home? Unreal."

"Pissed on someone’s Rice Krispies one too many times?" said another. "Let’s see who steps up and takes the reins. That’ll answer some questions. (Referring to all the shots) that's a message being sent, don’t ya think?"

Lured By "Faked" Crash, Gambino Boss Frank Cali Rushed Into An Ambush

By Ed Scarpo Friday, March 15, 2019

A pick-up truck had smashed into Cali’s silver Cadillac Escalade SUV, prompting the mobster to rush outside. Video surveillance shows Cali briefly talking to the man who jumped out of the truck — until a muzzle flash and a barrage of shots sent Cali scrambling for cover underneath his Cadillac.

It was too late.

The shooter pumped at least six 9mm bullets into him before he hopped back into the vehicle and sped away. (Cops would recover 12 shell casings at the scene).

Yesterday, the NYPD combed surveillance footage of Staten Island’s bridges but found no trace of the vehicle leaving the borough. Apparently, the truck had already been abandoned before such an exit; the truck had been dumped at a demolition site, as per a police source.

Cali was declared dead at Staten Island University Hospital Wednesday— and his murder has raised questions about the possibility of a civil war within the Gambino crime family or a mob war with another family, there’s four others, take your pick…..

At a press conference Thursday at police headquarters, Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea noted that investigators were looking into multiple theories about Cali’s assassination.   :snip:   https://www.cosanostranews.com/2019/03/lured-by-fake-crash-gambino-boss-frank.html

NOT A SANCTIONED HIT, NYPD SAYS: Suspect In Custody For Gambino Boss Slaying

Ed Scarpo

Saturday, March 16, 2019

The New York Post is reporting that  a suspect is in custody in connection to the slaying Wednesday night of reputed Gambino mob boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali outside his Staten Island home. Police sources told The Post Saturday that the suspect is a white male in his late 20s or 30s, and he is being questioned about the Wednesday night shooting. Authorities got the suspect’s fingerprint off the license plate of Cali’s silver Cadillac Escalade SUV — which he handed to the mobster after allegedly smashing into the car, the sources said. He shook hands with the shooter before he was killed, a source said.

The shake was captured on surveillance footage from Cali’s brick mansion in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island. Cali, 53, had rushed out of his home shortly before 9:20 p.m. Wednesday after a motorist in a blue pickup truck reversed his vehicle and smashed into the mobster’s Cadillac Escalade, causing it to “rock significantly,” Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said this week.

The footage, obtained via a search warrant, shows Cali and the man having a conversation and shaking hands before the man hands Cali the license plate that fell off the Cadillac during the crash that lured the Gambino boss outside, sources said.

The "hit man"— said to be 30-45 years of age — opened fire with a 9 mm weapon as Cali turned to put the license plate in the trunk of the Escalade, according to sources.

Murder Of Gambino Boss Frank Cali Was More Romeo And Juliet Than The Godfather

Ed Scarpo

Sunday, March 17, 2019

Anthony Comello, 24, has been in custody in New Jersey since he was arrested yesterday morning on the Jersey Shore. As things now stand, he faces charges on Staten Island, where he will be extradited (most likely tomorrow) for the murder of Gambino acting boss Francesco (Franky Boy) Cali.

There's no official word about the motive for the murder, which was widely thought to be a gangland hit. However, as we reported earlier, Comello killed Cali because Cali wouldn't let him date his niece. Our sources say the young man was troubled, with drug and mental health issues.

And we report again that Comello admitted to asking President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for "permission" to shoot Cali.

The murder of Frank Cali leaves a hole at the top of the Gambino crime family, said someone who knew Frank.
