Staff attempted to insulate president’s policies from criticism ahead of election

Adam Kredo

April 29, 2014

Previously unreleased internal Obama administration emails show that a coordinated effort was made in the days following the Benghazi terror attacks to portray the incident as “rooted in [an] Internet video, and not [in] a broader failure or policy.”

Emails sent by senior White House adviser Ben Rhodes to other top administration officials reveal an effort to insulate President Barack Obama from the attacks that killed four Americans.

Rhodes sent this email to top White House officials such as David Plouffe and Jay Carney just a day before National Security Adviser Susan Rice made her infamous Sunday news show appearances to discuss the attack.

The “goal,” according to these emails, was “to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure or policy.”

Certainly bad behavior, but not sure this will go anywhere.

It's not bad behavior. Its a phoney scandal ginned up by faux news to make that wonderful President Obama look bad.

EMAILS POINT TO BEN RHODES AS KEY TO BENGHAZI TALKING POINTS

A year ago, Ed Lasky of the American Thinker speculated that White House security official Ben Rhodes – a speechwriter with no prior national security experience or expertise – was at the heart of the Benghazi scandal, specifically the false talking points spouted on Sunday news shows by former UN Ambassador (now National Security Advisor) Susan Rice that the Sep. 11, 2012 attack was a protest against a YouTube video.

Now, those speculations seem to have been confirmed by the release of a batch of emails obtained by Judicial Watch through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Lasky quotes the emails, which pinpoint Rhodes as conducting a "prep" session for Rice on the Friday night before her Sunday morning media tour, with the goal “To underscore that these protests are rooted in [an] Internet video, and not a broader failure [of] policy.”

In 2013, Lasky reminded readers that Politico's Carol Lee had once described Rhodes as "one of the obscure guys who wrote Obama's campaign speeches in Starbucks and played video games into the early morning hours." After his mysterious elevation within the administration, "Now he attends national security meetings and takes writer's refuge in a secret office on the third floor of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building."Scissors-32x32.png

WHITE HOUSE TO SUSAN RICE: BLAME THE VIDEO FOR BENGHAZI ATTACK

Blame the video, not the president's foreign policy. That was the White House's advice to Susan Rice as she prepared to appear on Sunday morning talk shows after the terrorist attack in Benghazi.

A newly released email collected by Judicial Watch in response to a FOIA request shows the White House pushed Ambassador Susan Rice to promote the idea that an internet video mocking Islam, not President Obama's foreign policy, was responsible for attacks in the Middle East, including the one in Benghazi.

There has been much discussion of a set of talking points which were edited by the CIA at the State Department's behest for use by Members of Congress. But there was another set of talking points being prepared at almost the same time for use by Ambassador Susan Rice. Rice appeared as a surrogate for Secretary of State Clinton on five separate Sunday morning news programs on September 16th, 2012.

This should go with Casino's post "email Links......" as they are about the same result. . The dem press/msm won't cover it but its clear as day -- Obama's reelection at any cost was the price.

I don't think it will. Time was, people got pretty angry when a White House closed ranks and lied to protect the President, but I think a lot of people would look at this story today and say, "OK, they lied. So what?"

KUDOS to Fox.

This morning, April 30,

they are hot and heavy on the " Bombshell Benghazi smoking email"

Krauthammer says it is a classic cover up of a cover up.

Tim Allen ends his " Last Man Standing" show with digs at Obama and keeps Benghazi alive.

Of course he is a known conservative.

The Benghazi Scandal In One Email

John Hinderaker

April 29, 2014

One aspect of the scandal, anyway.

(Snip)

But it isnt all politics. In some respects, the emails are touching. Emails between Susan Rice and Eric PelofskyI am not sure what his role was at the timeconvey raw horror at the dawning realization that Ambassador Smith may have been murdered. This is one of them:

RiceEmail0021.jpg

No doubt the grief was genuine. But by Sunday, Rice had sucked it up and was ready to parrot the administration line.

The other striking fact about the emails is the complete absence of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Maybe someone was keeping them informed, but they are never mentioned in the emails (except when someone prepares a statement to be issued under their names). During the crucial hours, they are never referred to. There is no suggestion that they are playing a part; that they are in the loop; that they are making decisions; or that they are, in any way, important players. Maybe there are more emails, not yet disclosed, that would reflect their roles. Or maybe they really were ciphersseat warmers with no concerns beyond the political, not expected to do anything in an hour of crisis.

SHARYL ATTKISSON ON THE NEW BENGHAZI EMAIL REVELATIONS

On Wednesday morning, Glenn Beck interviewed former CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson – one of the few mainstream media reporters to do actual, skeptical reporting on the Benghazi affair, and other Obama Administration scandals, which is a big reason why she’s a “former CBS News reporter” – about the White House spin-control emails uncovered by Judicial Watch.

Beck mentioned the fraternal relationship between White House communications adviser Ben Rhodes and his brother, CBS News honcho David Rhodes, who was not entirely supportive of Attkisson’s reporting on Benghazi. She said she was glad to see “a little more light” shed on this relationship, and confirmed CBS News decided not to make the sort of Freedom of Information Act request that Judicial Watch used to pry the truth out of the Administration. (It should, however, be noted that CBS was the one and only mainstream media network to cover yesterday’s stunning Benghazi revelations, and while they gave the last word to White House spin doctors, they provided a fairly thorough report.)Scissors-32x32.png

All roads lead to…

Scott Johnson

4/30/14

At long last we have the email of assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for strategic communications (hack/flack) Ben Rhodes on the urgent need to disseminate the (patently false) message that the video got Ambassador Stevens et al. killed in the 9/11 Benghazi attack. Catherine Herridge observes:

(Snip)

I think we can make the appropriate inferences from the White House statement. Nevertheless, Rhodes should be able to clear up a few open issues, including the failure to produce the text of the email earlier, the ground for the continuing redaction, and the source of his belief regarding the video. At this point, all roads lead to the ineffably lame Rhodes.

UPDATE: I should add that Sharyl Attkisson — out from under the jurisdiction of Rhodes’s brother at CBS News — has more here. Please check it out.

AND THEN THERE IS THIS: Ed Lasky fingered Rhodes a year ago as “Obama’s fixer behind the Benghazi cover-up.”
