Valin Posted March 23, 2014 Author Share Posted March 23, 2014 NATO says Russia has big force at Ukraine's border, worries over Transdniestria BRUSSELS Sun Mar 23, 2014 7:25am EDT (Reuters) - NATO's top military commander said on Sunday that Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and said he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's mainly Russian-speaking separatist Transdniestria region. NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, voiced concern about Moscow using a tactic of snap military exercises to prepare its forces for possible rapid incursions into a neighboring state, as it had done in the case of Ukraine's Crimea region. Russia launched a new military exercise, involving 8,500 artillery men, near Ukraine's border 10 days ago. (Snip) The president of ex-Soviet Moldova warned Russia last Tuesday against considering any move to annex Transdniestria, which lies on Ukraine's western border, in the same way that it has taken control of Crimea. The speaker of Transdniestria's separatist parliament had urged Russia earlier to incorporate his mainly Russian-speaking region. Transdniestria split away from Moldova in 1990, one year before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, amid fears that Moldova would shortly merge with neighboring Romania, whose language and culture it broadly shares. "The president's naivete with regards to Russia and his faulty judgment about Russia's intentions and objectives has led to a number of foreign policy challenges that we are facing," Romney told Bob Schieffer on CBS's "Face the Nation." "Unfortunately, not having anticipated Russia's intentions, the president wasn't able to shape the kind of events that may have been able to prevent the kinds of circumstances that you're seeing in the Ukraine." (Snip) The escalation has served as an unfortunate vindication for Romney, who was mocked by Obama during the 2012 presidential race for saying that Russia was the greatest geopolitical foe facing the United States. Yesterday, Russian troops captured the Belbek airbase and the Novofedorivka naval base, along with more Ukrainian warships. Today, the BBC reports that Russian troops and Crimean “self-defence” forces captured another Ukrainian warship, the Slavutych. The command vessel was seized by Crimean “self-defence” units and Russian troops after a two-hour assault in Sevastopol, a Ukrainian defence spokesman said. The BBC’s Ian Pannell in Belbek says the Ukrainian troops on the peninsula feel beleaguered and abandoned by their commanders. And this morning, , Ukraine Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya says that chances of war are growing: Speaking on ABC-TV’s “This Week” program on March 23, Deshchytsya said: “We don’t know what Putin has in his mind… That’s why this situation is becoming even more explosive than it used to be a week ago.” In Washington, a top White House aide said it’s possible that Russia could invade eastern Ukraine. Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken told CNN’s “State of the Union” program that Russia seems to be trying to intimidate Ukraine by massing thousands of troops along the border. The Ukrainian flag and its marine standard fly alongside the Russian tricolour put up by the forces which seized the base of the 1st Separate Marine Battalion, Ukraine's top military unit, earlier this month, as Russia took over the Black Sea peninsula. Russian troops wander freely through the base, but the Ukrainians appeared to have retained control of the armoury, the barracks and other facilities within the compound on Sunday, two days after Moscow formally annexed Crimea. "There were provocations up until today; they were trying to threaten us and buy us," Ukrainian First Lieutenant Anatoly Mozgovoy said of the Russian troops, but "the flag will be up until the final order is issued." clearvision Posted March 24, 2014 Share Posted March 24, 2014 I heard on the radio that Ukraine's equipped and ready military is down below 10,000.
