Significant Eruption Started at Indonesia’s Kelut
Erik Klemetti

I don’t have many details, but news out of Indonesia appears to be that a significant eruption (see above) has started at Kelut (Kelud). News (mainly in Indonesia) suggests ash falling upwards of 15-40 km from the volcano, some of it gravel-sized. The latest monitoring data (see translation below) noted an eruption at 23:29 (local time) and that the volcanologist have left their posts due to the eruption (also note the comment on the far right bottom of the table). The BNPB has recommended that all people living within 10 km of the volcano be evacuated. The Indonesian government has set up 78 evacuation shelters around Kelud and only a few hours ago, the alert status had been raised to its highest level.

UPDATE 3:00 PM EST: I’ve added a composite image of JMA weather satellite images (see above) that show how the plume grew between 1700 and 1900 UTC (2 hours). Seems like the eruption is on a similar scale to the 1990 explosive event (hat tip to Alain Bernard for pointing me to this data). The current advisory from the Darwin VAAC has ash to FL450 (13 km / 45,000 feet).

Which Product was More Dishonestly Marketed: Amazing Live Sea Monkeys, or Barack Obama?

Bryan Preston

2/11/14

Kids of a certain age remember ads for Amazing Live Sea Monkeys. They ran in the backs of comic books. The ads promised that Amazing Live Sea Monkeys would hatch, grow, and become your friends.

When Barack Obama burst into American politics, he promised to be a different kind of politician. He promised Hope. And Change.

Despite their skepticism of the young, inexperienced senator, many Americans fell in love too.

Amazing Live Sea Monkeys promised to be the most amazing, unbelievable, interactive pet ever.

But when Amazing Live Sea Monkeys arrived to an eager kids hands, they never lived up to the amazing ads. The incredible instant pets turned out to be tiny little disappointments.

Kids who bought Amazing Live Sea Monkeys ended up feeling like this.

Adults who ended up buying into Barack Obama ended up feeling like this.

Disappointment with Barack Obama will last a lot longer than disappointment with Amazing Live Sea Monkeys.

I remember those Amazing Live Sea Monkey ads. Didn't fall for them then, and never fell for the false promises of Obama either. Too bad so many did.

The Week in Pictures: Pop Culture Overload Edition

Steven Hayward

Got a lot of movie and pop-culture memes and images in the hopper this week. Not sure why, but it just happens. If there are any quantitatively-oriented readers out there, you will note this feature aims for several common elements in every collection: Star Wars, Star Trek, and Dr. Who references; Monty Python; bacon (baaayyycon!); beef, well-armed cheesecake at the end, and of course non-salutes to the Obamanation in the White House. Dont always get them all (except for the well-armed cheesecake at the endthats mandatory), but we came close to perfection this week I think.

Survey: 1 in 4 Americans Don’t Know Earth Revolves Around The Sun http://weaselzippers.us/174112-survey-1-in-4-americans-dont-know-earth-revolves-around-the-sun/

Americans are enthusiastic about the promise of science but lack basic knowledge of it, with one in four unaware that the Earth revolves around the Sun, said a poll out Friday.

The survey included more than 2,200 people in the United States and was conducted by the National Science Foundation.

Ten questions about physical and biological science were on the quiz, and the average score — 6.5 correct — was barely a passing grade.

Just 74 percent of respondents knew that the Earth revolved around the Sun, according to the results released at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

Fewer than half (48 percent) knew that human beings evolved from earlier species of animals.
