The Mid-Week in Pictures: SoTU Edition

1/29/14

Im on the road the middle of this week, which means airplanes that still dont have in-flight internet. Guess I have to switch to Johns carrier. Anyway, the least I can do is disgorge some of the good photos and memes piling up in my in-box, since I posted last weeks roundup a day early, also because of travel. Cheers!

Cable networks have stumbled from time to time, but MSNBC is the first network to be literally beneath contempt.

UPDATE: Having revealed themselves as despicable bigots, the folks at MSNBC have now deleted and apologized for their offensive tweet. Their true colors, however, have been shown.

Suicide bombers storm Iraq ministry building, 24 killed

Suadad al-Salhy

BAGHDAD Thu Jan 30, 2014 10:16am EST

(Reuters) - Six suicide bombers burst into an Iraqi ministry building, took hostages and killed at least 24 people including themselves on Thursday before security forces regained control, security officials said.

The brazen attack on the building belonging to the Ministry of Transportation in northeast Baghdad coincided with a month-long standoff between the Iraqi army and anti-government fighters in the western province of Anbar.

No group claimed responsibility but suicide bombings in Iraq are the trademark of al-Qaeda linked groups. State buildings are a target for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and its allies that have been regaining momentum in a campaign to destabilize the Shi'ite Muslim-led government.

Gassy German cows blamed for barn explosion

BERLIN — A herd of dairy cows nearly lifted the roof off their barn in central Germany when methane released by the animals caused an explosion.

Police in Hesse state said in a statement that a static electric charge apparently triggered the detonation, and a spurt of flame, on Monday at a farm in Rasdorf. The roof was slightly damaged and one cow suffered light burns. No people were hurt.

Police say 90 cows are kept in the shed and it wasn't clear why quantities of methane had built up. Bovine belching and flatulence releases large quantities of the gas.

Sen. Udall's son arrested on drug charge, law enforcement say heroin involved

1/30/14

The son of U.S. Sen. Mark Udall was arrested on drug and trespassing charges, the Boulder County Sheriff's office said Thursday.

Jedediah Lee Fox-Udall, 26, was booked into Boulder County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of possession of drugs and four counts of trespassing, Cmdr. Heidi Prentup said. Deputies found him at about noon when responding to a call of a man breaking into cars in the semi-rural community of Eldorado Springs, where Sen. Udall lives.

They discovered drug paraphernalia on Fox-Udall, and he admitted using heroin in the previous 48 hours, Prentup said.

Noonan: Meanwhile, Back in America . . .

The growing distance between Washington and the public it dominates.

Peggy Noonan

Jan. 30, 2014 6:54 p.m. ET

The State of the Union was a spectacle of delusion and self-congratulation in which a Congress nobody likes rose to cheer a president nobody really likes. It marked the continued degeneration of a great and useful tradition. Viewership was down, to the lowest level since 2000. This year's innovation was the Parade of Hacks. It used to be the networks only showed the president walking down the aisle after his presence was dramatically announced. Now every cabinet-level officeholder marches in, shaking hands and high-fiving with breathless congressmen. And why not? No matter how bland and banal they may look, they do have the power to destroy your lifeto declare the house you just built as in violation of EPA wetland regulations, to pull your kid's school placement, to define your medical coverage out of existence. So by all means attention must be paid and faces seen.

I watched at home and thought: They hate it. They being the people, whom we're now supposed to refer to as the folks. But you look at the polls at how people view Washingtonone, in October, had almost 9 in 10 disapprovingand you watch a kabuki-like event like this and you know the distance, the psychic, emotional and experiential distance, between Washington and America, between the people and their federal government, is not only real but, actually, carries dangers. History will make more of the distance than we do. Someday in the future we will see it most vividly when a truly bad thing happens and the people suddenly need to trust what Washington says, and will not, to everyone's loss.

In the country, the president's popularity is underwater. In the District of Columbia itself, as Gallup notes, it's at 81%. The Washington area is now the wealthiest in the nation. No matter how bad the hinterlands do, it's good for government and those who live off it. The country is well aware. It is no accident that in the national imagination Washington is the shallow and corrupt capital in "The Hunger Games," the celebrity-clogged White House Correspondents' Dinner, "Scandal" and the green room at MSNBC. It is the chattering capital of a nation it less represents than dominates.

Supposedly people feel great rage about this, and I imagine many do. But the other night I wondered if what they're feeling isn't something else.

U.S. hopes for 'framework' Mideast peace deal within weeks
Matt Spetalnick and Lesley Wroughton
WASHINGTON Fri Jan 31, 2014

I hope to win the lottery too! I also hope that before the end of 2014 the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders show up for a week of cheap meaningless kinky sex.

Sop far I am in a dead heat with the Obama administration.

LONDON (AP) — Prince Charles has called people who deny human-made climate change a "headless chicken brigade" who are ignoring overwhelming scientific evidence.

The heir to the British throne, a dedicated environmentalist, accused "powerful groups of deniers" of mounting "a barrage of sheer intimidation" against opponents.

He made the comments at a Buckingham Palace awards ceremony on Thursday.
