At least that's the emotional reaction to Carrie Underwood taking on the role of Maria in The Sound of Music. Lost in all the fetishization of Dame Julie Elizabeth Andrews, DBE, as "the one and only" is the memory of the woman who actually originated the role in Rodgers and Hammerstein's last musical, Mary Martin.
