What is interesting is up until fairly recently they were considered a very minor (and bizarre) sect of Islam. 79 is the year they really started pushing their views. 3 things happened at that time, (in no particular order) 1. the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, 2. The Iranian Revolution, 3. The Siege of Mecca. (1/2) They consider themselves the leader of the Islamic world (although the Egyptians disagree, rather violently) so they had to take action. The Iranians said the had the only Islamic republic in the world, Arab/Persian. Sunni/Shia aside this was seen as a direct threat to the family Saud. (3) The family Saud was slooooowly modernizing when all of a sudden on Nov. 20 1979 they woke up to discover that not everyone thought they were the greatest thing thing sliced bread.
