Libya leader apologizes for attack on US consulate

ESAM MOHAMED and MAGGIE MICHAEL

9/12/12

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libya's interim president has apologized to the United States for the attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi that killed the American ambassador and three of his staff.

Mohammed el-Megarif described the attack as "cowardly" and offered his condolences on the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans. Speaking to reporters, he vowed to bring the culprits to justice and maintain his country's close relations with the United States. He said the three Americans were security guards.

The attack on the Benghazi consulate was carried out by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad. They used machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

"We extend our apology to America, the American people and the whole world," el-Megarif said.

The question still remains, where were the Police and/or Army?

basically he said justice will be done, whatever he means by that

In his defense...what was he supposed to say? This is the sort of thing Presidents say at a time like this.

What are you, a Romney campaign strategist now?

Just making the point that this is exact sort of thing every President says at a time like this. I can find quotes going back as far as you care to look if you want.

House conservatives call for stripping aid to Libya, Egypt from spending bill

Russell Berman

09/12/12

A group of House conservatives is calling for foreign aid to Libya and Egypt to be stripped from a six-month federal funding bill set for a vote on Thursday.

A handful of lawmakers voiced outrage Wednesday at the Obama administration’s response to the attacks on the U.S. embassies in those countries, and suggested the inclusion of foreign aid could influence their votes.

Lawmakers said they planned to bring up the issue at a meeting of the conservative Republican Study Committee on Wednesday, although they acknowledged it would be difficult to strip the foreign aid in so short an amount of time.

Libyan Government Prosecutes Lockerbie-Compensation Negotiators

Patrick Brennan

9/12/12

The Libyan government has responded to yesterday’s attacks on the U.S. consulate with much more sympathy and alacrity than the Egyptian government has, but the relationship between them and the West doesn’t exactly seem to be thriving. Reuters reports:

(Snip)

It is obviously nothing unusual for the new Libyan government to try to distance itself from the horrors of the Qaddafi regime, perpetrated by men such as al-Senussi, and even to take it a bit too far when trying to consolidate political support. But repudiating the Lockerbie compensation agreement, however, is much worse than that, and augurs poorly for Libya and its neighbors.

(Snip)

The decision to prosecute members of the previous Libyan government who worked to open to the West is such a dramatic reversal that it might call into question the new government’s commitment to confronting the Islamist militancy that Qaddafi had in his last years (to be fair, one such reformer, Mahmoud Jibril, nearly won the prime ministership today, but let’s see how long those attitudes last against the reality of politics in a fractious failed state). It’s not clear how able and willing Libya, barely a nation-state in any sense, will now be to confront the security issues that present a serious threat to the wider region. Pro-Qaddafi militias and particular tribes and ethnic groups with loyalty to the colonel have contributed to that insecurity, but Salafists and other Islamist groups play a major role. And after this rejection of Libya’s one-time reconciliation with the West, today’s accusation by the Libyan ambassador in Washington blaming Qaddafi loyalists for the attack, when al-Qaeda in the Maghreb is a much more likely culprit, is not promising.

I'd hate to be a random group of a dozen guys hanging out in Libya right now. We have dispatched several ships. I suspect a quick missile strike with some dead bodies would benefit someone right now.

Yemeni protesters storm U.S. embassy in Sanaa: witnesses

Sep 13, 2012

(Reuters) - Hundreds of Yemeni demonstrators stormed the U.S. embassy in Sanaa on Thursday in protest at a film they consider blasphemous to Islam, and security guards tried to hold them off by firing into the air.

The attack followed Tuesday night's storming of the United States Consulate in Benghazi, where the ambassador and three other staff were killed. President Barack Obama said the perpetrators would be tracked down and ordered two destroyers to the Libyan coast, but there were fears protests would spread to other countries in the Muslim world.

Young demonstrators shouting "we redeem, Messenger of God" smashed windows of the security offices outside the embassy with stones and burned cars before breaking through the main gate of the heavily fortified compound in eastern Sanaa. Others held aloft banners declaring 'Allah is Greatest'.

"Do not be afraid to be powerful. Cold War-era gambits of proportionate response and dialog may have some utility in dealing with practical terrorists, but they are counter-productive in dealing with apocalyptic terrorists. Our great strengths are wealth and raw power. When we fail to bring those strengths to bear, we contribute to our own defeat. For a superpower to think small, which has been our habit across the last decade, at least, is self-defeating folly. Our responses to terrorist acts should make the world gasp!"

And....

" When in doubt, hit harder than you think necessary. Success will be forgiven. Even the best-intentioned failure will not. When military force is used against terrorist networks, it should be used with such power that it stuns even our allies. We must get over our cowardice in means. While small-scale raids and other knifepoint operations are useful against individual targets, broader operations should be overwhelming. Of course, targeting limitations may inhibit some efforts but whenever possible, maximum force should be used in simultaneous operations at the very beginning of a campaign. Do not hesitate to supplement initial target lists with extensive bombing attacks on nothing if they can increase the initial psychological impact. Demonstrate power whenever you can. Show; don't tell! (Do – don’t talk!)"

Obama alone: This president does not need intel briefers

Marc A. Thiessen,

September 13 2012

How long had it been since President Obama attended his daily intelligence meeting in the lead-up to the Sept. 11 attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Egypt and Libya? After all, our adversaries are known to use the anniversary of 9/11 to target the United States.

According to the public schedule of the president, the last time the Obama attended his daily intelligence meeting was Sept. 5 — a week before Islamist radicals stormed our embassy in Cairo and terrorists killed our ambassador to Tripoli. The president was scheduled to hold the intelligence meeting at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, the day after the attacks, but it was canceled so that he could comfort grieving employees at the State Department — as well he should. But instead of rescheduling the intelligence briefing for later in the day, Obama apparently chose to skip it altogether and attend a Las Vegas fundraiser for his re-election campaign. One day after a terrorist attack.

When I asked National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor if the president had attended any meetings to discuss the Presidential Daily Brief (PDB) since Sept. 5, he repeatedly refused to answer. He noted that Obama had attended a principals meeting of the National Security Council on Sept. 10 and reiterated that he reads the PDB. “As I’ve told you every time you ask, the President gets his PDB every day,” Vietor told me by e-mail, adding this swipe at Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush: “Unlike your former boss, he has it delivered to his residence in the morning and not briefed to him.” (This new line of defense was echoed this morning by my Post colleague, Dana Milbank, who writes that Bush was briefed every day by his intelligence advisers because he “decided he would prefer to read less.”)

Oh my. On FOX they are talking about Egypt embassy. They say there are two compounds... one working and one residential. They say staff is bussed in each day to the working compound about 30 minutes from the residential compound by "secure" buses. Does not sound very good to me.

Evidently, this obscure filmmaker is identifying himself as a Coptic Christian. It was originally reported that this film was made by a jew and financed entirely by jews. Turns out it was financed by.....you guessed it, Egyptians. The film was released one day before it showed up on Egyptian TV.

He has a really weird history, including check kiting and meth production convictions.

Something really smells about this film. If these attacks were coordinated, then this is all a big propaganda play and the US State Department played right into it.

Egypt May Be Bigger Concern Than Libya for White House

HELENE COOPER and MARK LANDLER

September 13, 2012

(Snip)

President Obama telephoned Mr. Morsi and the president of Libya’s National Assembly, the White House said early on Thursday, in calls that seemed different in tone, suggesting dissatisfaction with Cairo’s response as opposed to Tripoli’s.

To Mohammed Magarief, the leader of Libya’s National Assembly, Mr. Obama “expressed appreciation for the cooperation we have received from the Libyan government and people in responding to this outrageous attack,” the White House said in a statement.

To Mr. Morsi, there was no mention of appreciation. Instead, the White House said in a separate but parallel statement that Mr. Obama “underscored the importance of Egypt following through on its commitment to cooperate with the United States in securing U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel.”
