The recent visits of two senior Chinese generals is fueling speculation that China's military is preparing for the outbreak of a new conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

The China Post reported July 15 that China appeared to be stepping up military preparedness following the inspection trips to Shenyang, in northeastern China.

Gen. Guo Boxiong and Gen. Xu Caihou, both vice-chairmen of the Central Military Commission (CMC), China's top military body, visited the military region. Observers said the visits coming so close together was unusual.

Reports from China noted that a recent PLA newspaper report identified Shenyang as a zhan qu or warfare theater, instead of the normal jun qu, or military region. The choice of language triggered the concerns about China preparing for a conflict.

China is believed to have several hundred thousand troops near Shenyang as part of its fears that a collapse of the North Korean regime in Pyongyang could trigger a wave of destabilizing refugees into northern China.

The PLA Daily reported that Gen. Guo was accompanied by Maj-Gen Qi Jianguo, assistant to the chief of general staff of the PLA, and Maj-Gen Gu Junshan, deputy director of the General Logistics Department of the PLA, during the recent visit.

Gen. Xu was accompanied by Navy commander Admiral Wu Shenli and inspected the North Sea fleet based in Dalian.

The inspections were meant to gauge military readiness and a military analyst told Phoenix TV that the visits appear linked to the recent North Korean sinking of the Cheonan warship and plans for joint U.S.-South Korean naval exercises set to begin within the next few weeks.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il’s health is said to be declining and there are concerns in Beijing that Kim’s death could trigger a crisis on the peninsula.

A new Korean War is the last thing China wants. It would cripple them financially.

Heck, if the idiots start something, the Chinese might just send the PLA into North Korea to put down Mad Kimmie and his ilk.
