Breitbart:

NEW YORK, June 11 (AP) - (Kyodo)—The U.N. General Assembly on Friday elected former Swiss President Joseph Deiss as its president ahead of its 65th session beginning in September.

Speaking at a press conference after his election, Deiss said that one of the key goals for the assembly is "further promoting the effectiveness of our work and the credibility of what the body does."

Among specific areas he cited are human rights, economic governance and the environment, as well as the working methods of the body, which is the chief policymaking organ of the United Nations.

Unlike the 15-member Security Council, the General Assembly comprises 192 members -- each with one vote, but no legal force.

Also high on the agenda is a summit on the Millennium Development Goals, slated for September.

A target of 2015 was set for achieving the eight goals, including the eradication of extreme poverty and reduction of child mortality, but the global financial crisis has gravely impacted progress for some nations.

"These goals remind us that poverty is multifaceted and needs to be combated by a wide range of measures," Deiss said in his acceptance speech. "The commitment of the international community is particularly important at this time."

"What I will try to do is to activate the debates," he said, adding that reaching consensus was critical.

In six months he'll be wishing he was still neutral. Good luck with the circus, sir...
