A string of explosions took place amid continuing clashes between “State of Sinai” and the army in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid on Wednesday. The violence started when militants attacked on at least five security checkpoint on Wednesday morning, according to the military spokesperson.

“State of Sinai”, the Sinai-based extremist group that has pledged allegiance to “Islamic State”, claimed the attacks via affiliated social media accounts, saying it attacked over 15 checkpoints in Sheikh Zuweid. Media reports said the attack included three suicide bombs, one of them on Al-Refaie checkpoint, reportedly killing all security personnel present.

A North Sinai resident told Daily News Egypt that the attacks, which all occurred at the same time, were some of “the biggest in Sheikh Zuweid”. He added that the Sheikh Zuweid police station was surrounded by militants on Wednesday morning. He said that the road between Al-Arish and Sheikh Zuweid was blocked, and that there are reports of dozens of deaths on both sides. The resident added that numerous civilians lost their lives as a result of the clashes, which erupted this morning. No official confirmation of events has been made.

Egypt's air force hits Daesh positions after deadly Sinai assault

July 1st, 2015

Egyptian air force F-16 fighter jets pounded jihadist positions in the Sinai Peninsula Wednesday afternoon. The airstrikes were in response to a deadly coordinated attack against 15 separate military positions by an affiliate of the Daesh group, which left at least 60 Egyptian soldiers dead.

Egyptian security officials said jets hit ISIS positions in the town of Sheikh Zuweid, militants are setting barricades, beseiging the local police station and mining the streets. The "Sinai Province" of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after it took place. The assault involved three suicide bombers and among other things targeted an Egyptian army officers' club.

The attack came just one day after Egypt's President Sisi vowed to crackdown on extremism, following the assassination of Egypt's top prosecutor in a Cairo bombing on Monday that was also claimed by ISIS.

Egypt at War

Over the last few days, Egypt has faced a terrorist wave. First, there was theassassination of Hisham Barakat, Egypt’s state prosecutor, the equivalent of the Attorney General. Barakat was the target of Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist animus for his role prosecuting thousands of Islamists since Gen Abdel Fattah el-Sisi overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated president Mohammed Morsi in 2013. Now, today, a wave of attacks has killed at least 50 soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula. Ominously, several Egyptian security sources are pointing the finger at Turkey, Qatar, and Iran. According to Kirk Sowell, probably the best open source Arabic analyst today, the Saudi-funded Al-Arabiya satellite, the Egyptians are accusing Turkey of being operationally behind the attacks. Unease at Egypt’s human rights situation may be real, but that does not mean that the United States can be sanguine about the fight Egypt now faces.

Given Egypt is the most populous Arab country, I'd say so. These attacks are only one problem el-Sisi and the Egyptian government face...and maybe not even the most pressing. Egypt is broke, by broke I mean they're looking in the sofa for loose change.

Egypt

Quick Facts

Population:

84.2 million

GDP (PPP):

$553.6 billion

2.1% growth

3.2% 5-year compound annual growth

$6,579 per capita

Unemployment:

12.7%

Inflation (CPI):

6.9%

FDI Inflow:

$5.6 billion

We and the EU. Still that's not good. It speaks to the Arab World in general.
