An interesting post, here: http://haskellfamily...-statement.html

Victim Impact Statement

by Kurt Haskell

Every victim of a crime in Michigan is entitled to make a statement in open court regarding the impact of the crime on their life. The statement is limited to the victim's physical, emotional and financial well being as it relates to the crime. Keep that in my as you read my statement. Below is a copy of the victim impact statement I gave today at the Underwear Bomber sentencing hearing. When reading my statement, keep in mind that I am a practicing attorney in the State of Michigan. In addition, I regularly practice in the Court the hearings are taking place at and therefore, I am somewhat limited as to what I can say. We were limited to 5 minutes each.

Scissors-32x32.png

On Christmas Day 2009, my wife and I were returning from an African safari and had a connecting flight through Amsterdam. As we waited for our flight, we sat on the floor next to the boarding gate. What I witnessed while sitting there and subsequent events have changed my life forever. While I sat there, I witnessed Umar dressed in jeans and a white t-shirt, being escorted around security by a man in a tan suit who spoke perfect American English and who aided Umar in boarding without a passport. The airline gate worker initially refused Umar boarding until the man in the tan suit intervened. The event meant nothing to me at the time. Little did I know that Umar would try to kill me a few hours later as our flight approached Detroit. The final 10 minutes of our flight after the attack were the worst minutes of my life. During those 10 minutes I sat paralyzed in fear. Unfortunately, what happened next has had an even greater impact on my life and has saddened me further.

How the Yakuza went nuclear

What really went wrong at the Fukushima plant? One undercover reporter risked his life to find out....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-in/9084151/How-the-Yakuza-went-nuclear.html

On March 11 2011, at 2:46pm, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck Japan. The earthquake, followed by a colossal tsunami, devastated the nation, together killing over 10,000 people. The earthquake also triggered the start of a triple nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, run by Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). Of the three reactors that melted down, one was nearly 40 years old and should have been decommissioned two decades ago.

Scissors-32x32.png

Approximately 40 minutes after the shocks, the tsunami reached the power plant and knocked out the electrical systems. Japan’s Nuclear Industrial Safety Agency (Nisa) had warned Tepco about safety violations and problems at the plant days before the earthquake; they’d been warned about the possibility of a tsunami hitting the plant for years.

The denials began almost immediately. “There has been no meltdown,” government spokesman Yukio Edano intoned in the days after March 11. “It was an unforeseeable disaster,” Tepco’s then president Masataka Shimizu chimed in...

Scissors-32x32.png

Tepco has long been a scandal-ridden company, caught time and time again covering up data on safety lapses at their power plants, or doctoring film footage which showed fissures in pipes. How was the company able to get away with such long-standing behaviour? According to an explosive book recently published in Japan, they owe it to what the author, Tomohiko Suzuki, calls “Japan’s nuclear mafia… A conglomeration of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, the shady nuclear industry, their lobbyists…” And at the centre of it all stands Japan’s actual mafia: the yakuza.

It might surprise the Western reader that gangsters are involved in Japan’s nuclear industry and even more that they would risk their lives in a nuclear crisis. But the yakuza roots in Japanese society are very deep. In fact, they were some of the first responders after the earthquake..

Chris Christie to Warren Buffett: Just 'shut up'

Scissors-32x32.png

During a discussion with CNN's Piers Morgan about tax rates, Christie made it known that he's just about had it with Buffett, the world-famous investor who lent his name to a proposed tax hike on the rich.

"He should just write a check and shut up," Christie said. "I'm tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he's got the ability to write a check -- go ahead and write it."

Earlier in the interview, responding to a question on class warfare in the political system, Christie, who has developed a reputation for not mincing words, said he didn't want to discuss Buffett.

"I'm so tired of talking about Warren Buffett," Christie said. "What are you going to bring up next, his secretary?"Scissors-32x32.png

I was so shocked I did not shut it off until it was over. I kept thinking it was a joke of some kind and most certainly that would show up at the end so I kept watch. Of course, this nation was not really founded by folks who were fleeing religious persecution. That is a myth. Of course, Native Americans were not herded onto "reservations." Of course, Chinese immigrants were not mistreated while working on the railroad. Of course, Japanese Americans were not forced out of their homes and into internment camps. Of course, there were no 'huddled masses yearning to breathe free' who gave up everything and nearly starved to death over the centuries in order to live in this country. It is ONLY the Black Americans in this nation who have had anything to overcome!

I AM OUTRAGED, and INCENSED!

Comedian David Cross has fessed up to snorting cocaine in the same room as President Barack Obama and his Secret Service agents while at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

"It was a tiny granule of coke that I put on my wrist and said, 'Watch this. I need a witness.' And then I ducked under the table and did it," Cross said. "It wasn't like I got high. The jolt was similar to licking an empty espresso cup."

Cross, who admits to experimenting with a wide range of drugs, including crack cocaine, said his goal at the 2009 event was not to get high.

"It was just about being able to say that I did it, that I did cocaine in the same room as the president," he said. "I'm not proud of it, nor am I ashamed of it."Scissors-32x32.png

First thing I would think of doing while meeting the president and surrounded by secret service.

GOP Presidential Contenders Are All Out of Office and as a Result Out of Touch

Contenders for the Republican presidential nomination would better understand the needs of the electorate and therefore stand a better chance of getting elected if any of them were currently in office. Recent history shows that none of the three Republican frontrunners–not Mitt Romney, not Rick Santorum, and certainly not Newt Gingrich—can possibly win the GOP nomination, let alone defeat Barack Obama in November.

Why not?

Because none of them are current office-holders, holding day-jobs that put them in touch with the realities of governance. None of them function in the real world of political give-and-take and daily compromise. They’re all retired politicos trolling for activist votes in low-turnout primaries, or hoping to get well-paid speaking gigs after inevitable defeat, by appealing to the most adamant and ideological elements in the conservative coalition.

....

It’s more than a coincidence that the only people to actually win presidential nominations of either party since 1984 (when former veep Walter Mondale was the hapless Democratic candidate) have been working office holders who still drew salaries from either state or federal government for representing the people who selected them. Holding office—facing regular decisions about spending bills and budgets, public works projects, policy planning, and even executing killers impels any candidate toward pragmatism, common sense, and the American mainstream. In the midst of the 1992 presidential campaign, Governor Bill Clinton made a point of personally overseeing the execution of convicted cop killer Ricky Ray Rector, which helped Slick Willy establish credibility as a moderate while distancing himself from the soft-on-crime, anti-death-penalty image of the prior Democratic nominee, Michael Dukakis. The current GOP field, by contrast, finds itself hindered by detachment—even alienation—from the quotidian details of governance. Gingrich resigned from Congress and the speakership 13 years ago after losing the confidence of his colleagues. Romney decided to abandon the Massachusetts governor’s office in 2006 in order to concentrate on his presidential ambitions and in the same year Santorum lost a senatorial re-election bid in a landslide of historic proportions.

Is it any wonder that when frustrated Republicans dream of some new, fresh-face candidate to rescue the party from its current doldrums, all of the individuals who figure prominently in their fantasies happen to be current office-holders, deftly handling the challenges of their ongoing responsibilities—Governors Chris Christie of New Jersey or Mitch Daniels of Indiana, Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin or Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

Words of warning from Michael Medved about the current contenders' chances in the general election. Yes, Reagan, Eisenhower, and Nixon were all out of office when they ran, but the circumstances and times were different for each and all had appeal beyond the primary voters.

Scissors-32x32.pngAre we still allowed to enjoy the occasional Chris Christie porn or has his shilling for Romney made that hopelessly taboo? Before you answer, watch the second clip below too; I tossed it in there especially for the social cons among us. The closer he gets to a VP nomination, my friends, the redder he’ll get. Coming soon, presumably: Second look at climate-change skepticism?

Jackson Lee to face challenge from rapper Cornbreadd in November

Nine-term Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who easily won reelection in 2010 with 70 percent of the vote, will face a challenge this November from Maurice Duhon Jr., who writes a political blog and is also a Houston-area rapper who goes by the name Cornbreadd.

Duhon announced his candidacy on Tuesday, and told the Houston Press that he's running because "I believe we can do better.

"The current instability of our financial markets, a rising rate of poverty and a massive national debt are just a few of the reasons why we must do better," he said. "I plan to introduce and participate in an evolved and updated political conversation with the residents and business owners of the 18th district and her surrounding areas."

The Houston Press also reported that Duhon will host a fundraiser called "WHO and WHAT is an Uncle Tom? A Retrospective Conversation," next week.

IS THIS GUY REALLY AN AMERICAN WITH NO PAST? - THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE??????

WHERE ARE THE GIRLFRIENDS of OBAMA? I hadn't thought about this - but where are O's past girlfriends - surely he had at least one? No past girl friends popping up anywhere? Strange - strange to the point of being downright weird!

OK, this is just plain old common sense, no political agendas for either side. Just common knowledge for citizens of a country, especially American citizens, who know every little tidbit about

every other president (and their wives) that even know that Andrew Jackson's wife smoked a corn cob pipe and was accused of adultery, or that Lincoln never went to school or Kennedy wore a back brace or Truman played the piano.

We are Americans! Our Media vets these things out! We are known for our humanitarian interests and caring for our 'fellow man.' We care, but none of us know one single humanizing fact about the history of our own president.

Honestly, and this is a personal thing ... but it's bugged me for years that no one who ever dated him ever showed up. Taken his charisma, which

caused the women to be drawn to him so obviously during his campaign, looks like some lady would not have missed the opportunity....

We all know about JFK's magnetism, McCain was no monk, Palin's courtship and even her athletic prowess were probed. Biden's aneurisms are no secret. Look at Cheney and Clinton-we all know about their heart problems. How could I have left out Wild Bill before or during the White House?

Nope... not one lady has stepped up and said, "He was soooo shy," or "What a great dancer!" Now look at the rest of what we know... no classmates, not even the recorder for the Columbia class notes ever heard of him. Who was the best man at his wedding? Start there. Check for groomsmen. Then get the footage of the graduation ceremony. Has anyone talked to the professors? Isn't it odd that no one is bragging that they knew him or taught him or lived with him. When did he meet Michele and how? Are there photos? Every president provides the public with all their photos, etc. for their library. What has he released? Nada - other than what was in this so-called biography! And experts who study writing styles, etc. claim it was not O's own words or typical of his speech patterns, etc. Does this make any of you wonder? Ever wonder why no one ever came forward from Obama's past, saying they knew him, attended

school with him, was his friend, etc. ? Not one person has ever come forward from his past. This should really be a cause for great concern. Did you see the movie titled, The Manchurian Candidate? Let's face it. As insignificant as we all are... someone whom we went to school with remembers our name or face... someone remembers we were the clown or the dork or the brain or the

quiet one or the bully or something about us. George Stephanopoulos, ABC News said the same thing during the 2008 campaign. Even George questions why no one has acknowledged that the president was in their classroom or ate in the same cafeteria or made impromptu speeches on campus. Stephanopoulos was a classmate of Obama at Columbia-class of 1984. He says he never had a single class with him. Since he is such a great orator, why doesn't anyone in Obama's college class remember him? And, why won't he allow Columbia to release his records? Do you like millions of others,

simply assume all this is explainable - even though no one can? NOBODY REMEMBERS OBAMA AT COLUMBIA Looking for evidence of Obama's past, Fox News contacted 400 Columbia University students from the period when Obama claims to have been there, but not one remembers him. For example,Wayne Allyn Root was (like Obama) a political science major at Columbia , who graduated in 1983. In 2008, Root says of Obama, "I don't know a single person at Columbia that knew him, and they all know me. I don't have a single classmate who ever knew

Barack Obama at Columbia ... EVER!

Nobody recalls him. Root adds that he was, "Class of '83 political science, pre-law" and says, "You don't get more exact or closer than that. Never met him in my life, don't know anyone who ever met him." At our 20th class reunion five years ago, who was asked to be the speaker of the class? Me. No one ever heard of Barack! And five years

ago, nobody even knew who he was. The guy who writes the class notes, who's kind of the, as we say in New York, 'the macha' who knows everybody, has yet to find a person, a human who ever met him." Obama's photograph does not appear in the school's yearbook, and Obama consistently declines requests to talk about his years at Columbia , provide school records, or provide the name of any former classmates or friends while at Columbia . How can this be? NOTE: Wayne Allyn Root can easily be verified. He graduated valedictorian from his high school, Thornton-Donovan School , then graduated from Columbia University in 1983 as a Political Science major in the same '83 class in which Barack Hussein Obama states he was.

Some other interesting questions. Why was Obama's law license inactivated in 2002? Why was Michelle's law license inactivated by court order? According to the U.S. Census, there is only one Barack Obama - but 27 Social Security numbers and over 80 aliases. WHAT!? The Social Security number he uses now originated in Connecticut where he is

never reported to have lived. No wonder all his records are sealed! Somewhere, someone had to know him in school...before he "reorganized" Chicago and burst upon the scene at the 2004 Democratic Convention and made us swoon with his charm, poise, and speaking pizzazz. One of the biggest CONS this country has ever seen, and they are

getting away with it.

In the tough economy, an educated woman was forced to apply for a job in a lemon grove. After the foreman had reviewed her résumé, he frowned and said, “I must ask, do you have any actual experience in picking lemons?”

“As a matter of fact I have,” she answered. “I’ve been divorced three times and I voted for Obama.”

@SrWoodchuck -- I don't think that is pummeling an expired equine at all. Not knowing who our president is drives me crazy. I am willing to give up the birth certificate issue, but not knowing anyone who remembers him from his Columbia days? That is just bizarre.
