Barack Obama Lies About Registering for Selective Service

"I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.
"And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue."
Obama did graduate from high school in Hawaii in 1979, but he could not have registered for Selective Service then. Nobody could. In 1975, President Gerald Ford terminated the Military Selective Service Act. It was not reinstated until July 1980. That is one year after Obama graduated from high school. In July 1980, Obama was no longer living in Hawaii. He was living in Los Angeles.
And Hat Tip to The Right Reason's own Howlin for remembering this little detail. As Dan Rather will confirm, Howlin has an excellent ability to separate fact from fiction.
Edited to add: This is not suggesting that Obama never registered for Selective Service. He did...on 4 September 1980, which is approximately a year and a half after he graduated from high school. Not, as he states in the interview "When" he graduated from high school. And while his reason for registering when he did is completely legitimate, he registered at the start of his second year as a college student. Not as a freshly graduated high school student.
He had clearly chosen a course in life that did not include voluntary military service. There is nothing wrong with that at all...until he claims 28 years later that the reason he decided not to serve was that the United States was no longer engaged in "active conflict". With American hostages being held in our embassy in Tehran, a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, an American boycott of the Summer Olympics, and a very hot "Cold War", there were plenty of reasons to justify military service in 1980.

Put it on the web, give it a lot of hits, get Drudge to pick it up, and....
I don't know how to put a video like this together, but I bet somebody on THIS site does.
Edited to add: This was written BEFORE discovering that The One had actually registered. See the next post.

Pajama's Media: 8/12/08
After contacting the Selective Service System for an answer several times since late June, Pajamas Media obtained official confirmation from the Selective Service System via email that Barack Obama did indeed register for the Selective Service as required by law, and is eligible to run for the presidency.
Mr. Owens,
Barack Hussein Obama registered at a post office in Hawaii.
The effective registration date was September 4, 1980.
His registration number is 61-1125539-1.

It is a rumor that the Obama campaign has chosen to ignore despite numerous requests, and it is a rumor that even Snopes couldn’t seem to confirm or deny definitively.

Good info Rheo. Thanks. Is there some holiday in September when he would have enough time to fly from LA to Hawaii?

Edited to add Trivia: The calendar that year was exactly the same as it is this year.

Another edit: While I think that his claim to have wanted to join the military does not really fit with his lifestyle and ambitions at that time in his life according to his own autobiography, AND his reasoning behind registering some exaggerated, the claim to have registered for the SS does seem legitimate. When he said he registered is wrong, but honestly I understand how you could forget that. What I find weirder, is his inability to remember people and places in his life during specific portions and by his campaigns own admission.

His biggest problem here is that he justifies his decision for not joining the military with the claim that the Vietnam war was over and we weren't engaged in any active military conflict. However, we'd signed a cease fire with Vietnam in 1973, and Saigon fell in 1975. I'm not sure why Vietnam would be relevent in 1979, nevermind 1980.
He performed his legal obligation of registering for Selective Service, but obviously, that does not support his claim that he ever actually considered serving in the military. To the contrary, by the time he registered, he had already spent a year at Occidental College.

Agreed. And I think if he had considered this, it would have been in his autobiography. It is simply a convenient story.

Or inconvenient once the new media starts doing the math. Silly Obama. If he'd just try a little honesty, he wouldn't find himself in these positions so often.

Telling the truth. What a novel concept.

Good catch Howlin!
I might also add regarding that thing about "We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point"
IIRC ... The Iran Hostage Crisis occurred not long after he graduated from HS

The real fun will be happening real soon when these two nitwits start contradicting each other when their lies don't add up.
Biden will say he ended the draft as well...

Man... what a coincidence!
Right after I graduated from high school I actually always thought of curing cancer as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option.... or winning the gold medal in the Olympic synchronized swimming...
... but I too elected to swill beer in college.
