Did anyone in the media hear that a U.S. Senator is on trial?

Over the last few years, I have supported Senator Bob Menendez for his tough stance on Cuba and Iran. In other words, this is not your typical Democrat who went along with two of President Obama's worst deals.   
So thank you to Senator Menendez for showing that there is more to the Democrat than identity politics.
At the moment, Senator Menendez is caught up in a legal battle. Frankly, I don't know how it will end up.   
Nevertheless, I do know that no one in the  media seems to care about it, as we see in this report:

Democrats Keep Their Mouths Shut As Menendez Trial Gets Weirder

In 2008, Sen. Bob Menendez sent a letter of support to the State Department to get two women from the Dominican Republic a U.S. visa, and one of these women happened to be the girlfriend of a wealthy eye doctor who prosecutors say bribed the Democratic senator with gifts and luxury vacations in exchange for favors. At least, that’s what Menendez’s former staffer, Mark Lopes, said while testifying against his old boss in court on Monday.
Today, Menendez and his wealthy friend, Dr. Salomon Melgen, face 18 counts of bribery and fraud. Both say they’re innocent of wrongdoing. Melgen was convicted of Medicaid fraud earlier this year and was the single largest Medicaid recipient in 2012 — snagging a cool $21 million that year. At the heart of the case against the eye doctor is a $8.9 million billing dispute, which is when prosecutors say Melgen asked Menendez to intervene with the government on his behalf.

Cory Booker Gave $20,000 to Menendez’s Legal Expense Fund

 

Democratic Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.) gave $20,000 to the legal expense fund of Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.), who is now on trial for corruption charges, records show.
Salomon Melgen, the wealthy Florida doctor prosecutors say had a "corrupt pact" with Menendez, and his wife also donated tens of thousands to a prior legal expense trust that was established by Menendez.
Booker appeared at the opening day of the corruption trial last week and sat in the first row behind his Democratic colleague. Booker said he expects "some serious appeals" if his mentor is convicted.

The AP Had an Interesting Take on Menendez's Trial

While the AP didn't bury the lede in their report - that Menendez is on trial for accepting donations from an eye doctor in exchange for lobbying on his behalf - they spent much more time highlighting how the senator is making use of a bad situation. Though he is not able to vote in the Senate during the trial, he is nonetheless attending DACA protests, and sending press releases and tweets on behalf of the Democratic Party. This "flurry" of activity, according to the AP, proves that Menendez may be stuck in a courtroom, but is not entirely keeping him from Senate work.
The AP went on to discuss Menendez's "spirited" defense team and advisors who are helping him fight for his vindication.
“He has chosen to continue his fight for New Jersey while at the same time fighting to clear his good name, when most people under these conditions would’ve simply collapsed,” senior political adviser Mike Soliman said.
He continues to work on Democrats' behalf because he believes he'll be acquitted, the AP suggests.

This Trial Could Remove a Senator: You’ll Believe What CNN Did Next

The ongoing trial of Sen. Bob Menendez involves a multi-million dollar bribery and corruption scandal and sordid details aplenty. The trial’s outcome could fundamentally alter the political makeup of the U.S. Senate. In a deeply divided congress where every vote counts—Republicans are frantically trying to persuade their colleague from Alaska to support the latest version of a healthcare reform bill—one would think this trial would matter to members of the media.

Think again.

CNN’s own Poppy Harlow noted on September 6 the case was “a big deal… because this is the first bribery case involving a sitting U.S. Senator in over three decades,” and promised to cover it closely. But the network has only mentioned the trial once since then, a Media Research Center study found.
