A new, fast-growing ransomware outbreak is spreading across Europe, with reports of infections in Russia, Ukraine, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, as well as India.
The antivirus firm Bitdefender identified the ransomware as a variant of a known strain called Petya that Bitdefender is calling GoldenEye. Most reports have used the family name, Petya.
The ransomware encrypts files on Windows computers and demands a $300 ransom to have them unencrypted.

U.S. infections will become more likely as the business day takes flight.
Many of the first reports came from Ukraine.:snip:
